Hi all. Sorry if this has been posted before but I can not find anything about it.
Suddenly my starter stopped working, Ive done all checks.
Battery = New, fine
Solenoid = Fine (jumped)
Dismantled and cleaned it.
Continuity between positive pole to brush = Continuity
Continuity between positive pole and case = No continuity (60k Ohms)
Continuity between commutator pairs = Continuity
Continuity between commutator and shaft = No Continuity
When assembled there is continuity between the positive and the shaft but I guess this happens through the commutator.
Brushes are at their end of life and need replacement but they make contact and I don't think its the problem now.
After assembly the motor turns but very slowly and consumes 30 amps. Any idea?

Winding is shot. Get on eBay and buy a rebuilt one. Problem solved.

Good morning!
I am experiencing a small problem with the starter on my 81.
I hit the button and there is a short delay, 1-2seconds. Could
This be a sign that a good cleaning and lube is in order? I have
not done any maintenance in this area to date. Could the starter
gear be "sticking"? The starter does turn the motor over and will
start it. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. The
weather just turned beautiful in Arkansas and it's a good day to ride!

It sounds like it could be the starter button or the starter solenoid under the right side cover. You can get a aftermarket solenoid for $15 on eBay.

I'd spend 15 minutes renewing all the connections to the solenoid and starter positive and negative, with the battery disconnected too.
