My first six

Post by Phnompenhsix »

Hi all, I have just purchased 2 x CBX1000, a '79 and an 80 model. Always been a Kawa and Suzu man but the chance of these came up so I grabbed it. So one has the top end dismantled in a box. In a second box are a set of JE pistons complete, 67.50mm. It came with two cylinder blocks, one of which has been bored to take these pistons, ring gaps, piston to cylinder clearance all good. Also included are two cometic base gaskets.... so what do ya reckon, is this to compensate for the high piston crowns or was it for the second bike? Does anyone have any experience fitting these? Pitfalls and advice thereover gladly accepted. The sad fact is the owner of these two bike died a young man so unfortuanatly no tales to tell. All the best and cheers for now. :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Welcome to the ICOA forum!

I am not familiar with the JE pistons, but I assume they don't have a higher crown than the stock pistons. An additional base gasket does very little and probably would not compensate for a higher crown, if there was one.
It is probably just a spare.

Give JE pistons a call and have them reference the pistons you have, they are easy to work with and why guess as to what you have VS being positive, if you have the piston's part number you can just enter it in their search engine on their site.

Hi EMS, Jeff and Mouse
Thanks for the quick response, I will get in contact with JE right enough. Will take it from there, you would be surprised at the height of these pistons, really fill the combustion chamber. Shall get a photo or two up here. Cheers folks

Yo yo yo EMS ...I have a full set of standard pistons and barrels, that was when I saw the difference. Since last time got all info off the documentation which I found, these are high comp. pistons with valve pockets perfectly machined (adds.943 compression) Anyway all in place now, shimmed valves, good clearance valve to piston and now searching for cam cover bolts, part nos. 90017422003 x4 and 90038422003 x4 plus speedo drive cover 12441422000 which were lost. Also searching for the front part of the airbox part no. 17300422000 also never turned up. Anybody got stock out there? thanks T

Shall post photos soon.

I have two questions
Are you in Phnom Penh now?
If so, how did 2 cbxs end up there? :?

I can't imagine Cambodia being a great source for CBX parts.
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage
