New to CBXs just bought a 1982

Howdy,
Perhaps foolishly, I just bought a non running 1982 CBX. This is my first street bike, although I've ridden dirt bikes for about fifteen years now. I have a shop manual on order, but in the mean time I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to remove the seat. I've heard that it just slides back and off, but after removing the two nuts under the side covers, it still seems as solid as ever.

The seat does indeed just slide off backwards once you have the two nuts loose.
You may have to push a bit harder on the upholstery. I have a Corbin seat and I usually give it a bump with my hand to the part that is raised a tad behind the driver's position.
The stock seat being flat may a little more difficult.

Once you have it off and want to put it back on, be careful to make sure the two tabs on the tailpiece slide into the slots on the top of the rear fender cowl.

It is retained with four (2 per side) bolt 'looking' fasteners. 14mm head if I recall. After removing them, and the grab rail, then, as Mike stated, it's a tug-o-war. You might be able to place a wooden block against the front edge of the seat and strike that with a hammer to start it back. Be careful not to hit too sharply - could split the vinyl on the edge. Before installing it, look for contact marks/scrapes along the frame rail where the seat sits. A little polyethylene grease applied along the frame top rail will make future removal a fair bit easier. And, as Mike mentioned, be certain to engage the two tab-slot thingys in the rear while sliding it together. Often requires a slight downward pressure on the rear of the tail piece. Coordinate with engaging the tab under the fuel tank. Reinstall the grab rail and the two side bolts. Go riding!

I just managed to get the thing off. Thank you for everyone who gave me advice, I guess that I was too thick to understand that the rear hand rail needed to come off and that the " bolt looking" stud things they screwed into needed to come out. I also didn't realize that the rear cowl comes off with the seat. Something tells me that this is going to be a longer road than I'd hoped.

I suppose you know you are in for a carb rebuild. Search up that here and read how that's gone for other new CBX owners. If you are determined, you can do it, but compared to removing the seat......

Indeed the carbs need rebuild, but I dislike working on the things so I was planning to send them out the Oldschool Carbs.

Welcome to the club Thomas76. You have some work ahead of you but that's half the fun and the end result is well worth the effort.
I restored an '82 with the help and advice of the members and the info here. Take some time and search here and you can find answers to most of your questions. If you can't find the answer ask the question here on the forum and someone will help you out.
I think sometimes guys that have owned CBX's for 20 or 30 years forget what it's like to be a new CBX owner with little or no experience working on one. Before I bought my CBX I had owned and built motorcycles for 40 years but the CBX takes some specific knowledge.
In case you didn't get Nils comment your best choice for rebuilding your carbs is right here in the ICOA. Getting the carbs correct is essential to a perfect running CBX.
