I just straightened a faceplate ring, i turned up a steel flange to fit the inside dia of the speedo \ tach 114.5 mm dia and reformed the distorted ring with a soft hammer.
I now have to open the tach by un-peening the ring, the needle broke off and i want to repair it.

Just so everyone knows that might try this - the '79 bezels were aluminum and therefore much easier to straighten. The '80-'82s were steel.

Is it possible to open up the gauges to clean the inside of the glass and the dials for the rev counter, speedo and voltmeter?

I have tried to open up the rev counter by loosening the two small screws at the back, but that just seems to loosen the tacho drive.

What are the two holes for at the rear of the taco/ Speedo? Viewed from the rear they are at 5 and 11 o'clock.

I have just removed the gauge cluster from my 79 to try and repair the tacho needle which snapped.
I cant work out how to remove the black plastic sealing ring holding the gauge glass on the tacho so that I can get to the needle.
Does anyone have a solution or does it have to go to an expert?
Is there someone in Australia who can repair the gauges?
My speedo is slow in responding too.

Don! Welcome to the ICOA forum!

As discussed in this thread, the instrument housing is crimped. It is not a simple job to open it. You will have to uncrimp the cover ring to separate the glass from the instrument body..

Don, get a big hose clamp and put it on the back of the gauge to use as a lever point. Then get a paint can opener - they frequently have a bottle opener on the other end. Once you get it started with a teeny screwdriver, the paint can opener against the hose clamp is a dandy tool to work the crimped area open. Be patient.
