Fantastic thanks Spencer. The three wires are just tucked in behind the top of the battery near the back brake fluid cell and there is no rubber holder so will get one of those as well.

Dave et al helped me great deal with the carbs. Cleaning them yourself is definitely a task you should do as you learn so much. Since taking the carbs off is a time consuming job (if you don't clean them properly, you get quite good at this!) doing the job right is important. I got the carb kit from Randakk's cycle shack as well as Mike Nixons book on how to clean the carbs properly. Both invaluable.
I got a copy of the workshop manual off a guy on eBay. Not sure where else to find one though.

Re: G'Day guys and girls From an Aussie.
Questions about cleaning the carbs? Not sure if you had seen my intro, I am a new guy here as well so still needing my CBX. However, I have worked on multiple other bikes with the CV carbs and this gen cv carburetors are all fairly similar. One big thing is a camera. Take all photoes, especially of linkage etc and how they go together. Worst part, the throttle and choke butterflies and their peened screw ends....
For carb parts, K&L carburetor kits are what I got here. Not sure if you can get them down in australia. Came with needles, and jets, gaskets, etc to re-assemble. What it did not have was the o-rings for the fuel line connectors. You will want fuel safe nitrile or equal o-rings. Also of course, be prepared to replace any ugly rubber lines.
There are many guides out there, and without pictures, it is tough to really go through a carb cleaning procedure. Planning, tracking and organizing will keep it going well, patience will do it right, and having the equipment to tune will make it worth it. If the CBX ones are hard to find, try searching out the 750s or similar bikes. There are minor differences, but if you are good at wrenching, those wont matter and the 750 guides will give you a good lead in for all the fine fiddly stuff.

Re: G'Day guys and girls From an Aussie.
Wes,
My name is Anthony, I live in north western Sydney. I am also a new member of this club, I posted a introduction maybe 2 months ago.
I have a 1981 model B (prolink) CBX, not even close in condition to yours, but it is complete, almost original and has stories to tell via its will lived-in exterior. I am in the process of repairing it to have it registered. It was owned by a guy who moved from Sydney to SA (why would you do that???) and then took it off the road. Hasn't been registered for a number of years. I will restore it one day, but for now I just want to ride it..... and enjoy the bumps, bruises and wear marks. I am getting like that too, so we are compatible.
I am also completing a total rebuild of a CB900F. 1979 model. I love the 70s and early 80s 1000cc bikes. Every one I see I want to buy and ride.....taking me back to the halcyon days of my youth.
Anyway, if you would like to swap restoration stories or information on reliable mechanics /services let me know. Always happy to chat.'
All the best,
Anthony

Wes, like Mello said if you are going to tackle the carbs yourself the Mike Nixon carb book is a must.
Try contacting this guy and see if he can get cheap shipping to you.

Thanks guys awesome feedback and links. Just got back from the honda shop with a new flasher for the turn signals and about to go and play, will let you know how I go. Might leave the carbs for the moment as I am keen to have a ride and get her registered (boy with a new toy) hahahaha chat soon.

Just don't be in too much of a hurry to go ride. Would be a shame to have a cylinder running way lean then have to deal with a burnt valve or piston. Went through the same wait when I rebuilt my last bike. I could have gotten it running fast, but to run it safe and without potentially wrecking expensive or irreplacable parts, I invested many months and alot of money on a bike that was complete.

Re: G'Day guys and girls From an Aussie.
Ok guys just a follow up on my turn signals, tried the 3 prong flasher, blew a fuse (must have wired it wrong) I think I have worked out that White and Green line is ignition, Grey is turn signal switch, have bought a new flasher cam but two prong now will try tonight. Found some other issues with the wiring in the head light bucket, I kept losing power to the white/green stripe wire when ignition was on and found some crimped wires in the headlight bucket for the turn signals so took off the tape and soldered them and now I have good connection, check pictures out. Will keep searching tonight stay tuned.

OK we have lift off all turn signals are working, now for the stalling and reving issue. Once warmed up revs will drop and stall or the revs can increase on their own, twist the throttle and let it go, it seems to return but the engine still revs high, any ideas?

Re: G'Day guys and girls From an Aussie.
An old story but at least you got crimped connections.
I had a '79 on which the previous owner used alligator clips for connections.
A couple options on hanging revs could be from something simple like a dirty throttle sleeve, improperly routed throttle cables or an air leak around the carb boots or dirty carbs themselves.

Thanks Guys I'll check things out first, as the engine was just re-built I am thinking maybe the carb synchronisation might be it. Bugger having to go to work I would rather be working on the bike.

Hi Wes,
Welcome to the site. Not sure where you live in Australia , but I am in the Inner West of Sydney and have done a fair bit of work on many of these bikes (about 12 at last count) and have a 1978 red twin shock of my own, aka "Cybil".
If you need any help with getting your bike sorted, don't hesitate to give make contact. Happy to share my experience on these bikes with you so you can become as self sufficient in their maintenance as possible - teach a man to fish and all that jazz.
Those (not so) gorgeous wiring connections are a concern and I may be able to help you out there as well.
If interested, I have the tools necessary for doing proper carb synchronisation (a 4x and a 2x Carbtune manometers so all 6x cyls can be observed at once) and also checking and adjusting the valve clearance using shims. Have also developed a set of tools to make carb rebuilds a breeze.
Good luck with getting your ride fettled and running sweetly, and happy to assist as needed. PM me or em to tonycbx6@gmail.com
Keep at it Wes but be warned you WILL fall in love and get an addiction for these incredible machines from yesteryear.
Kind Rgds...Tony

wes1964 wrote:Thanks RJ CB650 will be interested to hear if your bike does the same thing. Looks like I need to get a signal flasher as well to see if they work. I received the original book, tools and key with the bike but not a manual, where would be the best place to buy one? Does anyone know the best way to clean the carbies? I'm a bit of a novice on these things but willing to try my hand at anything. This site is great I have never been on a forum before and the feed back I am getting really helps. Cheers Guys.
hi
my wife found CBX Manuals on the net and you could download them for about $9.50Aus. Managed to copy at work.
