Hello All,

Just a brief note to introduce myself. My name is Anthony, I live in Sydney, Australia.

I have been restoring a CB900FA for 10 months or so (return to my carefree youth) and needed a bike to ride whilst the project is underway. Although I have owned a range of fast, classic bikes, I have reached a stage in my life where I want to own and restore something that was part of my life. When I owned a CB900F, one of my good mates had a 1981 CBX1000. I couldn't believe how commanding that machine was.....the first thing you always notice is the width of the engine and the number of pipes sticking out of it. Something just doesn't look quite right, but it looked great! I was a poor student then, and have a little money now. I just decided I would buy a CBX, purely beause I alwways wanted one..........and I could.

I bought a complete CBX1000 Prolink, 6/1981 build. It was imported direct to Australia and was owned by the same person for 30 years and lived most of its life in Sydney before moving to Adelaide. It was then sold to the guy I bought it from....he intended to restore it but didn't get around to it. I bought it from Ebay and transported it back to Sydney, a sort of full circle.

The bike has everything complete other than the lower fairing. It is in resaonable condition for an older bike.....a bit like me......it is getting a bit "shop soiled" overthe years. It starts fine and then after 5 to 10 minutes starts to blow a bit of smoke out of only one pipe (it has twin exhauasts). I will compression test it next weekend and see what is happening. I may also do a leak down test and spend some time working it out. Suspect valve issues in 1 cylinder, but who knows?

I like the look of the bike as naked, may just ride it without the fairing and put a headlight and blinkers on for registration.

When I am finished restoring the CB900 the CBX will be in for the same deal; total rebuild from frame up.

I am loving these beautiful machines. Thye have soul and character and grace. Every repair is a project. As my 12 year old son said "when you buy a 33 year old bike, you buy a project". Not sure where he gets the wisdom, but it was true.

Welcome Anthony! Looks like you've stumbled onto a nice project there. Sounds like you're quite capable of restoring it. We're here to help you sort out all the little quirks these old things have. Let us know and post some pics.

Very nice intro. I have owned a couple 900Fs over the years and always liked them.
With regards to the CBX...go naked and be happy.

Hello again,

A couple of people asked me to post pictures of my CBX when I introduced myself. I have since taken some photos and thought I should share some images.

She looks 30 years old, but is still complete (I have the fairing) and starts without any much trouble. Has a constant pop coming from one of the first 3 cylinders, which should be fixed by some work on the carb. Otherwise good all round condition.

I am planning on replacing the seals on the front forks, and maybe a new set of springs. The bike was sold with an uninstalled Bitubo monoshock, which I will put on the back. Then a headlight and blinkers and off for registration.

Would love to hear from any of the CBX owners in Australia or NZ (where I travel very often).

From the look of the low riding rear end it is a good thing you have a new shock to put on.
If you do get into the carbs can you report back on the jetting/needle/clip positioning that you find. Always looking for carb info when pods are used.
Could the "popping" just be an exhaust leak?

Hi Anthony,

I am in Melbourne and am a new member here also - in my 20s, I had an 82 Prolink and regret selling it even though it had done about 180 thousand ks and was well over due for a rebuild - i have just bought another one from the states and am in the process of bringing it over. I will be turning it into a naked bike with the possibility of upside down forks and a single sided swing arm - all depending on how much money i can hide from the leader of the opposition! (AKA The Wife!)

Good luck with your project - the CBX is a great old bike, and sounds awesome with the right pipe!
