Ya, Mac, is she rougher that you expected? It's all there, we will help you make it sing. Take the good advice offered, go steadily. Your bike will be yours, and awesome.

Re: Engine and Frame se(r)ial mumbers.
Thanks for the feedback and advice.
It is probably in the condition I expected but still gives you a jolt when you first see it.
The engine seems to run fine so I'll take the advice of the team and start pulling it apart a piece at a time. My thoughts were to give it a thorough cleaning, not a valet, that will allow me to get close to the bike and I'll then be able to list the items that need attention.
My inspiration will come from looking at your bikes in the meantime.
I'll also be spending lots of time studying the Restoration thread (There is a serious amount of interesting information in there and I've only just scratched the surface.)
Once again thanks for the support and encouragement.

I use to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Just reread the post.....
I'm going to take the bike apart not the engine!

Enjoy the project, Mac.
When i got my bike, the plan was to just try to get her to run properly. She will demand attention to detail and more time than you might expect, but the result will be worth it!

Re: Engine and Frame se(r)ial mumbers.
Engine serial numbers beginning with SC03E-23.. are 1981 (or CBX-B) engines. Original 1979 (CBX-Z) motors were CB1E- 20..
1980s (CBX-A) were SC03E-20.. and 1982s (CBX-C) were SC03E-24..
( now you probably wonder what SC03E-21.. and SC03E-22.. serial numbers were used in??/ )
1980s (CBX-A) were SC03E-20.. and 1982s (CBX-C) were SC03E-24..

Re: Engine and Frame se(r)ial mumbers.
This was a tongue-in-cheek remark about the SC03E-21 and SC03E-22 engine numbers. They are not CBX. All SC03E-23 and SC03E-24 engines were black from the factory. As explained above, yours is not original to the frame.

Re: Engine and Frame se(r)ial mumbers.
Here is a really wild one. Wonder where the typo is. the frame serial number is actually entered twice, so it should be on the frame or the paperwork...
