I am really fond of both of these looks:80 cbx dude #6216 wrote:Thanks Phil, I sorta like the 2 stroke can look but if you hove some pictures of what you think looks better I could consider them!
But those are quite different from what you have, and you like what you have. IMO just going bigger with the tip would make it look more like something that belongs on a 4-stroke literbike. Something like this wouldn't be so different from what you already have.
As others have said, you're doing a great job with this project - can't wait to see how it works out! Your uncle made the right call with that staggered setup on the headers, IMO - it looks great! I also agree that the muffler placement looks really good.

I've already said how much I like the looks of your header pipes, but the more I look at them, the more nervous I get about clearance. With the forks at full compression, you should have at least 0.75" of clearance between the fender and those headers to be confident that they won't interfere under full braking.
Braking forces will compress the forks, but also bend them back - big modern USD SBK forks are bending back over 1" under race conditions - but I don't think we have to contend for that much clearance for a street-ridden bike.

What are you seeing Phil? He has to have 4+ inches of clearance in one of the prior photos.Syscrush wrote:I've already said how much I like the looks of your header pipes, but the more I look at them, the more nervous I get about clearance. That pic was taken with the wheel in the air, which would have the forks at full extension. The concern for clearance would be at full compression.NobleHops wrote:What are you seeing Phil? He has to have 4+ inches of clearance in one of the prior photos.

Wouldn't he get MORE clearance?? The engine will move DOWN under compression.....or do I see that wrong??Syscrush wrote:That pic was taken with the wheel in the air, which would have the forks at full extension. If that front wheel or fender ever touches those header pipes, then Mike has just crashed very heavily into something stationary. Nothing to worry about here.
Ride safe Mike.

Re: 6x6 exhaust for my 80 X
The #3 and #4 pipes are exactly the same size and bend as the stock CBX header pipes, #2 and #5 sit back 1/2 the distance of the pipe diameter or .690 thousands, #1 and #6 are back another .690 or the total thickness of one of the pipes (1 and 3/8 of and inch). I haven't compared the circumference of the stock tire and the ZRX tire but the ZRX wheel is 17''. -Mike

Wow. Love it! If I keep watching this thread, I'm gonna end up owing my machinst my first-born.
I expecially love seeing the old-school milling machine set up with the rotary table.

Re: 6x6 exhaust for my 80 X
Well, the small rectangular adapter plates that I was going to use between the original rear sets and the muffler plates are not going to work. So back to the research and development team...spent some time on the lathe and came up with these aluminum spacers, cut them on a 9 degree angle, made two different sizes to make the angle I want...
