I've got the crankcases back together, thanks for the advice on the oil rings.
I have put the pistons back onto the conrods & looking to install the piston rings.
In the Honda workshop manual the second piston ring is shown as having a taper along the whole width of the outer surface of the ring.
On the Honda rings I have obtained, I assume that the second ring is the one with a slight chamfer on the top outer surface edge of the ring only?
The top ring has no difference to the top & bottom outer edges of the ring.
Both rings install on the piston with the marking to the top.
Is all of the above correct?

The top ring is chrome-plated. That's the only way I could tell the difference.

You probably have a set of CB900F rings (same bore) with the oil ring being one piece?
In these kits the second ring has a circumferential notch. But the top ring is,like Dave says, plated also. This is a much easier ID than trying to see the taper, if there is one.
The notch on the 2nd ring in the 900 kit goes down.

I don't believe the rings are from the 900
The oil ring is 3 pieces.
The top ring isn't chrome plate, just plain cast iron (?). This is from memory, I'm not in the garage,
The second ring looks like a steel of some kind with the slight chamfer to the outer top edge as stated previously.
