new member in Indiana. low vin CBX.

Post by mark13018 »

Hello everyone, I buy and sell quire a few bikes and recently picked up this 1980 CBX from its original owner with 22k on the clocks but was neglected since 1993 and is pretty rough. It has a really low vin at 2000030 and engine at 2000058.
Unfortunately, with 12 bikes in my garage right now, this one is low on the list considering the carbs are going to be rough and I've been researching the maintenance of those and other things are a pain. So I will be selling it very soon. It may even be going to a local shop to be restored.
It has the DG exhaust not currently installed and has some cut outs in the air boxes and the carbs were rejetted back in the 80's as well.

It may be cleaned up and posted on eBay as well. I'd like to be able to get 1500+ out of it and I may have my auction start at that with no reserve... This may not be realistic though considering almost everything on the bike will need rebuilt and cleaned and the tank is probably the worst tank I've ever seen. The tank may not even be salvageable. It has severe rust on the inside and bubbling/pimpling paint on the outside from rust.
The exhaust is in pretty good shape and the seat, seat cowl, rims, etc are still in pretty good shape though. :?

Hello, and welcome. Where in Indiana are you located? I'm in the south-east corner, near Cincinnati.

I know a couple of folks who may be interested in your bike, if it's a reasonable distance from here.

Really nice find, mark! It seems to be all there, except the seat and exhaust not being stock. Even has the "Sport Kit"

Should be an awesome base for a resto! Would love to see that bike coming back to life, especially with the low serial number. Lowest one that I have on record. What does the VIN-plate on the steering nechk say for date of manufacture? In the upper righ corner.

I now have several interested parties including my local shop. I put the exhaust back on and cleaned it up a bit.

I am in the northeast part of Indiana.

I will probably list it on ebay with a starting price of 1500 and let it get bids from there. It does have the "sport kit" which is more desirable and the low vin is going to be a good thing for a collector too.

Considering this is probably the best known hub for CBX information and this is the lowest vin you've seen that is pretty amazing. I looked on the forum before signing up and noticed you guys store the vin numbers and I hadn't noticed one this low so I figured I would come to the forum and add my information to your list for records and safe keeping.
My intention was just to supply information here in this amazing (1 of 2 - 6cyl parallel hondas) Honda motorcycle and let you guys see another one before it gets lost and never seen on the web again. Although I will entertain offers to fellow forum members, my plan wasn't to sell it here, you all know the value and worth of these machines. I think I may have overpaid to begin with. I wanted the bike before I even got there and the guy wouldn't budge on price so I ended up paying his asking price.

The vin was posted previously and the neck plate shows date of manufacture 6/79 !!!

I think I answered all the questions so far. For some reason the thread is not sending me emails for responses even though it is turned on... If this is allowed ?? My email address is mbanddc39 at hotmail dot com. I answer emails all day and get them instantly.

I love motorcycles and Honda's more than any but I am more into the smaller Honda's, this is just freakishly HUGE!... I am short and it is difficult for me to feel comfortable even on a cb750 and this is about the same height so I have no desire to keep this one... I have a couple projects I am working on and could use the funds for them so this one will be up for sale on ebay soon unless I sell it private party... Thanks guys! Let me know if you need any more info on the bike

Thanks, Mark.

I think, we can confidently say now, that 1980 CBXes were produced in Japan for only two months: June and July of 1979.
There was no production in August and in September, Honda started making CBXes in Marysville, Ohio

This bike sold for $4100! Good for the seller, I suppose, but compare it to a very nice black '80 (38,000 miles with sport kit also), looking very good cosmetically and running well barely making $6000! The buyer will have 10K in the red bike to make it even as nice as the $6K one. But I guess he'll find that out soon enough.

Yeah.. The winning bidder contacted me several times throughout the auction and lives in Norway. It will cost him $500 to get it from Indiana to Florida, $1500.00 to get to Norway, then import duties and shipping from the port. He restores these over there and is well aware of the situation altogether... Also after I posted I sold it on facebook I had a recently added motorcycle enthusiast that owns a shop on the west coast comment as follows.

Either way, it fetched quite a bit more than I expected. I'm happy I picked it up when I did. I almost walked on it as the seller wouldn't budge from his asking price. :D

Congratulations, Mark! Glad you found a buyer who will take care of it. The gentleman who communicated with you and talking about a $1,000 tailpiece and a $5K cash offer may be a little off. Sure, a bike always brings more when taken apart, but you end up with parts nobody wants. And frankly, most of us here are into "the enjoyment and preservation of the Honda CBX Motorcycle" not so much the "dismantling of CBX Motorcycles for profit".

There seems to be a couple of guys in Norway who are specifically after low serial numbers and that may be what caught the buyer's eye and why he was willing to pay a premium for it.
1979 CBXes 00062, 00075, 00251,00671 and 00810 are in Norway, so is 1980 U.S. built CBX ..0251 as well as at least one of the early pre-production 1977 CBxes.

I have observed a trend over the years of Norwegian buyers hoarding NOS parts. The buyer may as well have a lot of stuff to return that bike into a great condition.

Yeah, I think we know who this is, and he wants what he wants, and makes no bones about it. Given the condition that bike was in, he will strip it, paint the black bits, do the engine, and replace pretty much everything else with NOS. He'd have done the same with any CBX he bought, it's the low number he's after.

Good for you Mark.

I did start the bidding on this bike but was shocked at how quickly it climbed. Congratulations on the sale. I do believe that CBX's are or will become the Vincents of the future as collectibles. Deep pockets will become a requirement of ownership.

EMS was spot on. The bike has been paid for and I'm just waiting on a shipper through uship to get it to Florida... He sent me this email after everything was finalized.

Quick update.

I just got off the phone with the shipper and talked to the person in Florida he is paying to work on the bike.
He reiterated what EMS said and how they go nuts for low vin numbers. He has been working on CBX models since they first came out at a honda dealership and still does it. He works with my buyer a lot and his friends over there, shipped a lot of bikes and rebuilt engines. He guessed that he will have 5-6000 in labor to go through the engine and carbs to make it perfect and better than factory again and 2500-3000 in parts.

Since the buyer has done this several times I'm sure he is aware of these numbers. He bought it from me for $4211.50 and paid an extra $540.00 to me to get it shipped to Florida. He will have 7500-9000 in work done here, then probably $1500 to get it to Norway. He does all the other work over there as far as getting the rest of the bike to museum/show quality. He will have $15,000-20,000 into it before it gets to his garage.

He also said most of these guys are on the cbx world forum and the picture of the living room with 5 CBX's in it is my buyers friend that buys them also. This may be my last thread here for awhile and I appreciate all of your input. You guys are awesome and I hope to pick up another one in the future and maybe I'll be more ambitious about working on it and have more free time to do so and I'll be back.
