spark unit help

Hi,
While stripping my 79 cbx I found that the cdi spark unit’s which are located under the battery box, all the back bitumen that covers the component has turned soft and ran out all over the place leaving a big blob of the stuff on the garage floor where it was left over night.

There is obviously something wrong as this should be a solid mass protecting the components.
My question is what could Couse this could it be it was getting to hot and has melted the black bitumen.
The bike was running ok with no issues.

That is normal for them to seap. All of the ones I have seen all have seaping issues. No solution other then replace but the weeping should stop. Mine all weap but not on floor as you said yours did. If it was mine I would just put something under it for a while and keep a eye on it. I think it will stop.

Two threads down is a solution. Both the design and the location of the 79/80 spark units are the cause of the "problem".

While I don't know the price of 3 new, or used, spark units, and associated bits required for this project, you might consider the Dyna S unit, from TIMS, as an alternative. While it may seem expensive at $300 USD, overall, it may be a bargain.

Good point, Larry. New spark units (which have appeared as of late) are outrageous. Even prices for the individual red cable wrap Prolink (and "F") spark units can be hefty.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think the pro link ones leak like the early ones. I think I would find some used prolink ones and mod them to fit. It would be alot cheaper. Most of these bikes are just used for puddle jumpers anyway and not long distance.

I forgot to point out Honda uses these same ignitors as the prolinks on other models.

Total cost $100. Plus need to mod the units and the bike. Plus, how long will they last? In favor of using '82 units, I can say that my '82 has done 45000 miles and 30 years. Just to present some thoughts and alternatives. (Recognising that the Dyna will, also, require a bit of install work. Not as much as adapting the '82 units, though.)

Good luck wither way with the project.
