Threaded holes on fork caps

Post by Syscrush »

Hey all.

I'm new to the CBX scene, still getting my '79 debugged and dialed in.

My bike has threaded holes in the fork caps, and I'm not sure why. My guess would be that they came from a bike that had Schrader valves in the fork caps to allow the adjusting of air pressure in the forks - but I didn't think that the CBX came so equipped, and I am pretty sure that my forks are stock - they're definitely 35mm in any case.

I'm wondering if this is stock/normal for a CBX? If so, what was the intended usage of those threaded holes?

Thanks!

The 1980 CBX had air assisted forks. They had 35mm tubes. Some retrofit 80 forks into the 79 as they are plug-and-play. Maybe a previous owner has done that.

Interesting. There are no valves in the caps, just threaded holes. If they had valves at some point, it seems that they've been removed and the holes blocked somehow.

A stock '79 also has threaded a hole in the cap, for another smooth "top cap", which in turn has a hex hole into which fits a plastic button.

My guess is you're missing the smooth decorative cover cap and button.

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

Those holes are positioned almost perfectly to use as attachment points for a simple mount for my GPS. It's really tempting to use them, but it can't be a good idea to start imparting wiggle forces onto the fork caps.
