Removal of 82 CBX fairing & Saddlebag
Gents,
Need your wise assistance on a modification.
I am pretty sure that someone must have done this mod previously.
I've seen an article from D. Wilson (Wichita Falls) a few years back, however, lost the article.
I want to remove the fairing and saddle bag from my 82 and hopefully use the headlights & brackets of a 79, any extra parts required?
I do not want to get stuck in the middle of the exchange waiting for parts.
The donor bike is a 79 CBX
Any assistance is appreciated ;))

Re: Removal of 82 CBX fairing & Saddlebag
Welcome cbxsei! Going right in, head first with the first post! Good form!
Have not done this myself, but I believe the Prolink (81/82) upper and lower fork bridges have the holes and holders for the headlight bracket, so it will bolt right on.
You will have to find a place for the electric connection box that hides in the fairing, unless you want to rewire everything and put it into the headlight.
For the saddlebags you need a relocation kit to mount the turn signals right on to the rear plastic cowl. Tim's supposedly sells the kit.

Welcome! The existing '82 wiring will all fold into the headlight bucket, but it's tight. You will need to drill out the threads for the gauge mounts on the top triple clamp as you need the thru-bolts of the '79 to hold the top of the headlight bracket. Few other minor things I'm sure you can work out.

Re: Removal of 82 CBX fairing & Saddlebag
Thanks for the info.
I still have two (2) questions ...
Q1 Is there any additional parts required when donor bike (79) is nearby?
Q2 Is the drilling really necessary? I want to keep my other option open, i.e if afterwards I decide to reverse course -install the fairing back.
Thanks again gents

You should have all the parts, if your '79 donor bike can spare them.
In order to avoid the drilling, you could get yourself a spare Prolink (39mm) top clamp.

That's the issue - he IS using the existing top clamp. Only other option is to find a longer bolt, thread it through and then nut the headlight bracket to that, or get a smaller-diameter bolt that just slides in. Just won't look stock from the top with these options. If your '79 is complete, then you should have all the parts. You also have to decide what to do about signals. Mix-and-match stock early and late or something else altogether.

Be really careful taking the '79 headlight apart. The bucket is plastic and has a little tab that the chrome ring clips on - Very easy to break that tab off which will ruin the bucket. The 30 year old old plastic is very brittle, especially if the bike has set out in the weather at all and it doesn't take much force to break that tab

Re: Removal of 82 CBX fairing & Saddlebag
Mission Accomplished ;))
Exactly as described above
Need 2 smaller & longer bolts (M6x50) to re install the speedometer head back.
The bolt is a smaller diameter, The head of the bolt is at the bottom of the speedo and I used a nut with a cap (same colour).
End result is an original look.
Only issue I did not have a male connector to plug in the original one (that feeds the fairing electrical) - So I had to splice before the fairing harness connector.
Plus use the original H4 bulb socket (connector)
As a reminder, my fairing removal conversion was from a 79 donor bike.
Thanks a lot to all the input/suggestion, It is very appreciated.
