New CBX'r in North Texas!

Post by delian »

Hello, all!

Wanted to introduce myself.. My name is Aaron.. I've recently acquired my first CBX after lusting after them for almost 30 years.. I've bought and sold a bunch of bikes in that time, but never ran across a truly great CBX until now.. My dad always said to hold out and spend more on good bones.. Well, I held out and found incredible bones for less!! I can't tell you guys how happy I am with what I've got to start with..

It is a 1980 X with a late model school engine which has had 79 cams installed.. Here are a few of the other mods..

Late model CBX forks 39mm
Fork brace
Low bars and sport grip
Brakes from a VF1000 (dual puck)
1100F Swingarm
1100F shocks
Corbin Gunfighter seat
8” headlight
5 row oil cooler
3 Spoke wheels from a Honda Hurricane
Dyna coils

My current plans for this bike pretty simple.. I'm going to install some upgraded rear shocks, a Dyna Ignition, a larger oil cooler, and some basic touch up of some little paint touchup here and there.. When I bought the bike, it came with some K&Ns and a Stage 3 jet kit that may go in as well, if I feel saucy.. Otherwise, this thing is going to stay more or less as-is because it's just so fun to ride it now.. I've put 120 miles on it in 2 days just getting used to how everything works!

Also, I have to thank Spencer big time ,as he provided me with my first mod, a set of LED turn signals! I was able to install them in about 20 mins and re connect the front running lights without effecting the idle voltage, which is AWESOME!

Next up, I'm going to be hitting up Louis when I head to Florida for a frame and some parts to build a cafe style X..

Here are some pics!

Welcome to the site, delian.
Some great upgrades on your bike. It might be the first DG pipe i have seen that has not turned blue.
Got the first one and already planning the next one...the addictive power of the CBX strikes again!

Delian, great bike! That's a pretty optimized hybrid. And welcome!

You might be interested to know that Honda still sells the chain case (guard) for the 1100F, and that will bolt right on to your 1100F swingarm. Or I should say, they did when I did my project a couple of years ago. It's chrome, and it looks like this:

Thanks, guys!

Yeah, Nils.. I was just starting to look at that chain guard issue the other day as I was lubing back there and working on the turn signals.. I was unaware that Honda still had them.. Going to have to take a look and see if I can score one!

BTW, that's a beautiful bike! I've been reading threads by a couple of guys on here, yours included, for about 3 months! Just wanted to get my hands on a bike before throwing my 2 cents into the ring.. :)

Steve, I've been addicted for a LONG time.. :) Having one has just made it worse.. My plans are to get another and start squeezing it with some tricks I've applied to cars in the past.. I've got a look in mind, and some performance tricks.. I just hope they carry over from the automotive world..

With regard to the DG, it really looks better than I thought from some of the things I've read online.. And included with the bike is a Kerker baffle that I'm considering installing to see if it will uncork the sound a bit.. :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

delian,

Nice looking ride you have there.

Nils,

I thought you were going to ask about delian's chain length based on your fender experience with the same swingarm.

Oh geez Barry, that is a capital idea.

Delian, this may be relevant: When I put my swingarm together I initially used 106 links of chain. And what resulted was that the rear tire was too far rearward at that length. The 1100F swingarm has the potential to locate your rear axle an inch or more rearward than the stocker. Note the careful use of the work 'potential'. Obviously this can only happen if your chain is longer than the stock length, (stock length of a 530 chain is 102 links). EDIT: 102 is correct - I edited my original post.

How did I learn this you ask?

I put 106 links on for starters, and then I put #230 of me on the bike and went for a ride, and quickly rubbed a hole in the rear fender. If you look closely at my photos you will notice that the fender was subsequently bobbed a couple of inches. I ended up shortening the chain to 104 links, and there was plenty of room within the adjustment range of the 1100F swinger to do so, and I kinda like the bobbed fender anyway, so I left it. But it's a data point and you might like to be aware of it. If the PO was more thoughtful than I was when he installed that swinger, then this is probably already sorted on your bike.

N.

EDIT: Pics!

Minor point, but there is still a little confusion here on chain length. The stock '80 is a 102 pin chain and is too short for the 1100F swingarm. The stock 1100F chain length of 104 is correct. It will lengthen your wheelbase about 3/4 inch - well under the stock rear fender with an 18" wheel. I typically have used 17" rear wheels for this conversion, and you may have a 16" there on your new bike, Delian.

Just so no one was confused about the STOCK '80 CBX chain length.

Nice bike you have there, Delian, and welcome aboard!

@#$%@#$% and sorry about that. I will edit my post - I should have been more careful. Thank you Dave.

Also - the chain length is of course a function of the sprocket set too - 18/42 in my case, which is the stock setup.

Yes, Nils - I was just about to add that all the above assumes the stock 18/42 sprocket set-up.

Lookin' good! Where'd you find the Bassani? That's the Mother Lode of aftermarket exhausts for the CBX. Actually is one on eBay right now also.
