early and late model starter

Post by kbart1 »

can anybody confirm if the starter motor on a late model (pro-link) is the same as the starters on the early bikes? i have an '81 motor and i am looking for a starter, there appears to be several early model ones around. would it fit? are all the starters the same?

thanks a lot!

Yes, all starters will work. The '80 ones were painted silver, all the rest were black, but functionally the same.

New if you can find one is >$500USD! I tore my ailing one down, and found the windings only had to be resoldered as they had separated from overheating. Worked fine after that. I have an extra late model motor if you need it. PM me.

Indeed, this was also my experience.
Here's what I found when I opened my 'dead' starter ...

A pic of the rotor commutator after cleaning, showing the problem in all its glory ...

And what it took to restore it back to as new performance ... Works well to this day.

Hope this helps.
