No spark to 3-4
I posted this over at CBX world to hoping to get to the bottom of this quickly! I really want to hear the Travesty run!
Got the Travesty set to fire up today and had a few issues. First being I couldn't get her to spin over. a few hours of troubleshooting and I got that fixed so I spun her over to prime up the oil system.
Next I checked spark to ALL the plugs. I found no spark to 3-4. Next I checked the coil and it was good checked power to the coil and that was good.
Went to the pulsar and was able to get a spark to arc on 1-6, 2-5 but not for 3-4.
Next I opened the book, then I checked the spark units. I was able to get the voltage drop on 1-6, 2-5 but not on 3-4.
Does this sound like the spark unit for 3-4 is bad?
If so does any one have one I can buy?
Mike

Mike:
You have a bad spark unit - the most common ignition failure on the CBX. I have no more good ones to spare (I have to save a couple for my projects). You can graft on the individual late model units (exact same unit except for wiring. Mike S just did a tutorial about this here somewhere. Late model units are easy to find. The biggest problem is digging the old one out from under the battery box. There are usually several early model units listed on eBay at any one time if you want to stick with the stock one.

Re: No spark to 3-4
Unfortunately, that is not that quick of a fix. Replacing the stock unit with another stock unit is risky, as you never know what you are getting. They are prone to fail. The improved, later units discernible by the red wire wrap and the individual set-up are less of a risk but they can be pricey. Because they are individual units, most sellers sell them individually. F owners sell them in packages of two (The 4-cylinder has only two) and they are the same. You will also have to make a wire pigtail to connect them to your wire harness.

Re: No spark to 3-4
Yeah, I hear you guys loud and clear.
I picked up an individual unit off ebay, $25 free shipping and have my fingers crossed that it will work.
I have been studing the diagrams and it looks like a simple cut and splice, won't look stock or pretty but the alternatives are to expensive for me right now.
As to getting the old spark unit out, no problem there. I pulled the rear fender off and I was able to get it out, took less that ten minutes.
I'll pull the unit off my 79 and transfer it to the Travesty so I can hear the Travesty run.
Once I have the other spark unit spliced in I'll swap mine back.
Got my fingers crossed on a used unit....no way to tell if they are good or not until they are jacked in and that is a bit of work.

You don't have to mount the good bike's unit to Travesty - just plug it in and let it hang. It does not need to be grounded. Good luck!

Re: No spark to 3-4
that's what i did dave, got spark to all 6 so the travesty has a bad spark unit. went ahead and mounted the good spark assembly on the travesty so i could fire her up.
she fired right up, sounds so sweeeet. after a bit of tinkering and checking for leaks i took her for a spin.
she does everything better than my red 79. power is smooth and linear, shifts beautifully....

Well, if you post something at 11:22 p.m. Eastern time both here and on CBXWorld, you are most likely to get a response earlier on CBXWorld as it is only 8:22 p.m. for most of their users and they still have almost 4 hours of computer time left. Here you may have to wait until 6:23 a.m. the next morning to get an answer, and your whole night is being wasted.
