My First CBX, Can't wait for the notes from that 6!!

Post by akinz »

Hey Guys!!

I've been crazy about these CBX's for a couple years now, and have kept my eye out for one for the past year. I'm 29 years old, but I love the vintage bikes. Something about the inginuity, and all the mechanics that go into the older bikes I like.

I finally found the bike I had been looking for. It definitly needed work, but was mostly original (no oem exhaust of course) and only had 6300 miles. I purchased it off of a member on eBay in Delaware. I left Muskoka, Ontario pretty damn early and drove the 11 hours straight to go pick it up.

Pictures are always deceiving and until you see something in person yourself it's hard to depict the condition. It didn't look bad, but the previous owner stated he purchased it at an estate auction, and was leaking oil out of the head gasket, brakes were seized and had a couple scratches etc on it but ran great. I originally purchased it for $4200 ( buy it now) but when I arrived the bike sputtered, ran on 3 cylinders then eventually the rest kinda picked up but eventually coughed out and died. I opened the gas tank and the smell of 30 year old petrol filled my nostrils. I used this as a bargaining tool and ended up picking the bike up for $3500 cdn.

See if I can put up some pictures to show you guys...

I am really not a fan of the Supertrapp's. I was hoping to find an oem exhaust somewhere but they are just sooo much money...

But low and behold I found another 79 with a mere 6800miles that had been completely dismantled for a restoration job that never got completed. Most of the parts are there, but there are some pieces that are missing.... and guess what it came with??? An oem exhaust!! It's not really to my standards but I think it will look and work better than the Supertrapps. The parts bike I picked up also came with an RC engineering 6 into 2 exhaust.

I unfortunately haven't been able to do any work to the complete CBX, other than polishing the cam plate covers and replacing the leaking valve cover gasket and the valve cover bolt grommets (which was where the oil leak was coming from :D )

I have been busy building a 77 cb550 and I've committed to completing it before I start my next project.

I'm just so excited to start on the 6, I'm thinking a classic race bike for the other cbx...

Look at all that floor space!
Those Supertrapps sound as good as they look, imho.
As you are already finding out these brutes are addictive.
akinz, great first post and welcome to the site.

Wow, i am amazed at how much response i have gotten regarding the exhaust. I amsure it would sound much nicer than the stock, i guess i will have to wait until i clean the carbs and take it out to appreciate them.

I am trying to remember where exactly i purchased it in delaware but cant quite remember. Im sure there were a lot of people that were turned off from the pictures. It just needed a little tlc and elbow grease and it came out looking pretty good.

I am really excited and looking forward to be able to get this beauty back on the road and be seen. I have only seen two since I started biking in 2006. So being able to show it off next summer should be a blast, but Im going to require a lot of assistance, so I figured you guys would be the most enthusiastic about helping me get this 6 back doing what it was made to do!!!

Lol, yes there looks to be some floor space in this picture, but it has been taken up by some other projects.

I am really interested in hearing what the exhaust sounds like.

I am really interested in hearing what the exhaust sounds like.
One of the many advantages of the Supertrapp is that you can adjust the sound by tuning the exhaust by adding or removing discs. You can even use an open cone end [too loud for my taste.]
From Supertrapp....
Q. How many diffuser discs should I run?
The answer depends on your displacement: disc diameter, power band, and noise level. Fewer discs reduce sound levels, more discs increase sound levels. Fewer discs increase low-end torque and richen the carbureted fuel mixture. More discs increase sound levels, increase top-end power and lean out the carbureted fuel mixture. NOTE: When tuning an exhaust system, start with fewer discs and add. Never start with a lot of discs and subtract. Generally on a stock set up (no engine modifications, and stock carb and air filter), you can start with six to eight discs on dirt bikes and ATVs. On V-twin, metric and cruiser bikes, start with twelve discs. A popular misconception: The more free-flowing an exhaust system is, the more power it will make. This is not true. Some backpressure (2-3 PSI) is necessary to achieve maximum power. This is why it is necessary to use the discs that come with your tunable SuperTrapp exhaust. The number of discs to use will depend on your application, displacement, disc diameter and power band. To assess the performance of any product that affects horsepower and torque, lap times and Dyno- runs are your best indicators. However, since most enthusiasts usually only have a “seat-of-the-pants” Dyno, running condition is the most obvious indicator. Pay attention to the coloration of the discs. Little or no disc coloration indicates a possible lean condition (remove one or two discs). Black or sooty discs are indicative of a rich, or oil burning condition (add one or two discs). Discs that turn a tan or golden color indicate an acceptable balance of fuel mixture and exhaust flow. Reading a spark plug is the quickest way to check if everything in the engine is working as it should. And, it will tell if the SuperTrapp has been tuned properly. A rust-brown spark plug color indicates that the plug is operating smoothly (exhaust is tuned correctly). A whitish look indicates that the burn is too lean (remove one or two discs). A blackish deposit on the plug electrodes (left by oil or fuel traces) indicates that the burn is too rich (add one or two discs).

The 6-2 Supertrapp is probably among the best non-OEM exhausts one can find for the CBX. Stainless steel retains its appearance. Headers turn slightly gold. The price for a good condition Supertrapp is still in a decent range although it is going up. I ran my '79 with 6 discs, it ran perfectly fine with stock jetting.
