Need help with speedometer removal

Post by 6Pipes »

Need some advise on this one.

I am changing out the instrument pads on my 79 X and according to the manual, the gages just "push out" of the instrument cluster. That worked fine for the tach but the speedometer has the odometer reset knob sticking out the side. Does that pull off or unscrew? I sure don't want to break anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

On the 79 it unscrews by turning backwards, against the reset rotation. The later models have a small screw in the tip.

Does the knob screw off the stem or does the stem screw out of the instrument?
This one is stubborn! I am turning clockwise and pulling "hard" and it just spins.
I think I will try a hair dryer on the knob and see if that helps.

If you're SURE you have a true '79 speedo (no screw hole in the center of the knob) the correct answer is kinda . . . . both

The plastic knob unscrews off of a metal stem (which is within the intrument) and then the knob pulls out of the side of the speedo so that the speedo can be removed from the cluster - Clockwise is the proper direction to turn it . . . . and the odometer numbers shouldn't turn when you turn it clockwise . . . . you'll need to turn it 10 or 12 turns - Then the knob should pull straight out

After spending literally hours fiddling and fussing I finally tucked the instrument pad in without removing the speedo from the cluster. Seemed the appropriate thing to do. I guess after 32 years it just decided it wasn't coming out. At the end of the day, I accomplished what I started out to do.

Thanks anyway.
