I memory serves me well, you had the head off to have some work done to it. You were talking about a "newly assembled top end". There is a significant amount of oil behind the pool plates in the cylinder head. Maybe you even had the oil cooler off. All this considered, you would have more oil to put into your engine. You didn't have just an oil change. Reality.

Is there some reason you don't read previous posts EMS ?? You jump right in the middle and make comments and assumptions which are not true. :no
This was a oil "change"......not a oil "fill". The bike was test ridden several times for ring break-in and shake down prior to this oil change.

Back to the original issue...... how is it that some CBX's take 4 qts at an oil change and some take nearly 6 qts :?:

You've turned a simple oil change question into yet another you vs them issue. I'll not go there. :no

Back to the original question...... how is it that some X engines take 4 qts of oil and others nearly 6 qts. :?:

Is there anyone else putting almost six quarts of oil in a stock CBX for a simple oil change? No oil sump extenders allowed.

You're probably right Spence...... no one else probably is......which makes this such a quandry. Later today I'll drain my X just from the sump plug and measure the qts of oil. There's obviously something going on here, so more investigation is needed. Will report.

I thought everybody knew that any CBX using DOT 5 brake fluid takes 6 quarts to fill . . . . all the others need less ;)

Forgive me, but I don't have a lot of time to read the thread right now. Every Honda I know of with a dipstick is measured with the dipstick sitting ON TOP of the threads. Could that be an issue in this particular case???

BTW, my '79 takes somewhat over 5 quarts as well. Don't remember exactly how much over.

Yer right Ron...... the X dipstick is suppose to be unscrewed, wiped off and then set onto the hole.... not threaded in at all.

Lots of bikes are like this and why it's kinda normal for me to check oil levels this way. Basically it's my default mode method of checking just about any bike that I don't really know the right way to do it.

Good to hear someone else's X is 5+ qts also..... I was beginning to doubt my sanity on this one. :crazy:

Yes...... I've heard of it.....and it's something to be controlled, but that's not what I meant by "never too much oil".

I was referring to the amount of oil available to an engine with all other factors in control, like proper oil running temp, flow rate and keeping it away from parts that might cause problems.

On my '82, it always took about 4 quarts and a cup to bring it up to the full mark on the dipstick. It seemed that if you put on a few hundred miles and checked it, it would be down about a half quart. If I was home after putting on the miles, it was no problem to reach under the workbench and bring it back to spec. If I was on the road, it was usually with Doug. My friend Doug had a BMW and always carried oil. so I'd bring it up to spec. Any way, I was on a trip without Doug and I stopped in a rest area to stretch my legs. I checked the oil. It never moved. 4000 miles later, when I finally got back home, I checked again. It still hadn't moved. So I changed the oil, but only put in 4 quarts. It would drop a little and stay there until the change a few thousand miles later.

I attribute the loss of that first half quart to windage. What else would it be?

I hear ya Bill.......and the engine is telling you something....i.e...... fill it half way between the marks and ride it. Mine works fine at the "max" line.....so that's where I keep it.

The '79 and '80 manual also mentions appx. 4.0 quarts after a change. What I haven't seen yet (still reading) is whether or not this is for a simple drain and fill or also includes a filter change. Does anybody know if the oil cooler drains when ONLY the engine drain plug is removed?? Also, this may have been touched on before, but the bike is definitely supposed to be on the centerstand according to the manual (and the dipstick is not to be screwed in. as mentioned above).

All I know for sure is that my '79 takes well over 5 quarts with an oil and filter change.
