Cam Chain Tensioner replacement

Post by RE5Guy »

Hi all,

I have just replaced the main cam chain tensioner (can't recall if that is A or B) and just wanted to post how remarkably easy it was for anyone who maybe contemplating replacing their own.

The engine needs to be tilted forward in the frame and carbs removed, the cams then need to be removed as well, you then have heaps of room to get at the tensioner.

By undoing both bolts on the block holding it in place you can then pull it out (you need to push the lower bolt all the way in from the outside to do this).

To get the new one in you need to compress the new tensioner but in such a way that when it is in the engine you can take the tension off easily. I tried a couple of things, but what worked best was simply squashing it inwards using a 1 inch wide piece of old inner tude like a big rubber band. When compressed, it is easy to replace it and bolt in loosely on the lower bolt only. The inner tube can them be pulled off easily with needle nosed pliers. Then tighten everything up and rebuild as per the book.

No worries!

cheers

Tony
