Reinstall carb question
Reinstall carb question
OK, so pretty soon, I will be tackling the job of reinstalling fresh carbs on my 79. I was reading through my shop manual the other day, and lo' and behold, it says to install the carbs and start the bike with the exhaust OFF? This sounds really strange to me, but it's there in black and white. Something about being able to see the blue flames and it makes it easier to adjust them? I always thought running a car/bike without an exhaust was a BAD thing, and would burn up a valve pretty quickly? What says ye' experts???

Re: Reinstall carb question
I tried to find this in the manual and could not. Where do you read this?
Re: Reinstall carb question
Well, the service manual I just got with my 80 model was an OLD one, yellow pages, might be 30 years old, but it's in there. I will scan it and throw a copy of it out here for you to see.

Re: Reinstall carb question
Running it for 15 or 20 seconds just to take a look couldn't hurt anything - Much longer than that and the valves will begin to heat up and they definitely won't like the rush of cold air they'll get when you shut it off
You can accomplish basically the same thing by touching the header pipes with your finger right after a cold start to see if all 6 of them are heating up equally . . . . less noisy too ;)

Well, if I remember correctly, basically the instructions said it was easier to judge the "functioning" of the cylinder by watching the blue flames, then just touching the header pipe. That doesn't always give an accurate reading. I will post it up tonight when I get home. I kinda thought it was strange, but there it was in black and white, and in all the CBX stuff I've read over the past few months, I don't remember ANYONE suggesting it be done this way. Maybe I was hallucinating? We shall see!!!!Don wrote:Running it for 15 or 20 seconds just to take a look couldn't hurt anything - Much longer than that and the valves will begin to heat up and they definitely won't like the rush of cold air they'll get when you shut it off

Well, it actually was something printed off the web, at the following link. It was tucked into some paperwork inside my service manual, I must have been tired last night reading it! Here's where this information came from:

Re: Reinstall carb question
Someone has suggested doing that here not that long ago, but it didn't come from any original Honda manual for any year CBX. Be interested to see your scan of the procedure. I have my original '79 manual from '79 and the '80 addendum, plus an original '81-'82 manual and I've never seen that anywhere in any of them.
I'd personally button everything up (after wet testing them on the bench for 24 hours). If they are clean and properly bench-synched, they should only need final gauge synced if you want to. But be interested to see what you can scan for us.
Oops - just saw your last post - OK.

Re: Reinstall carb question
Just finished reading 'tex's' link. In the link, on page 2, the guy talks about adjusting valves and not getting a shim seated properly. A tip for any 'first timers', after you have inserted a shim back into the bucket, the bucket, with shim, should turn/spin freely in its bore using your finger. If it won't turn/spin, start over. It WILL be free if the shim is seated properly.
P.S. I, too, have never heard of the 'no exhaust pipe' method.
