wire harness questions

Post by rider3 »

I'm in the process of resurrecting a 79 CBX and just put a new battery in today which left me with a few questions. First what is the correct point for the end of the neg. battery cable to attach to. It was in a box when I got the bike and all the logical places seem to have bolts larger than the terminal on the cable. Next I seem to have 2 wires in the headlite that are not plugged into anything, one is brown and the other is green/white. Both are hot when the ignition switch is turned on. I'm I correct in assuming that these are just extra since everything seems to work? Also the short branch of the harness that goes to the turn signal flasher has a green wire ( ground ) that is not plugged into anything, is this just in case a flasher is used that requires a ground? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

The negative cable goes to one of the bolts holding the starter in place.
A bit of a pain in the butt to get at but aren't a lot of things on these bikes.

Hey Rider, did you get welcomed? Welcome.

Yes, those wires you identified in the headlight bucket and at the turnsignal flasher are unused. Not sure of their purpose. As Steve said, run the battery ground wire down to the left-hand starter bolt, making sure that it is nice and clean and making a good ground. Here's a photo of mine coming apart - note the wire with the starter mounting bolt hanging down and the now-open left-hand starter bolt.

Last:

You really really need the shop manual and it's excellent wiring diagram. I have it scanned, but not posted. Will see what I can do to get that section to you.

Rider:
The other wire for the turn signal flasher just hangs also - not used. Again, I'm just up the road from you and can offer just about any help you might need. Just PM me for a phone #.

Thanks for the help everyone, I have a shop manual but it lacks a complete wiring diagram. Next step is to hang the engine back in it.

Those cam straps worked very well for the purpose, BTW...
