Engine Hanger Bolts
Just went to take the case guard off of my 79 and found out someone had simply glued a bolt head on the outside of the guard (nice, huh?) Anyway, I need to get a replacement bolt for the engine hanger. The microfiche says the size is 10 x 42 but doesn't give the pitch. Really don't want to pull another bolt just to check it. Anyone know if it is fine (1.25) or coarse (1.5)? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
What bolt exactly is it? I assume, the bolt that connects the engine guard to the engine hanger bracket?

Ping J.R. Luksik (sp?), aka cbxtras. He used to sell repro bars I think and he had a complete set of bolts for those when I needed them.JayDog wrote:Just went to take the case guard off of my 79 and found out someone had simply glued a bolt head on the outside of the guard (nice, huh?) Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
I am still confused what bolt he is talking about. If someone had simply glued a bolt head on the outside of the guard and that bolt is missing, it is the bolt that fastens the engine guard to the engine hanger (to the threaded hole in the middle of the bracket). That bolt is an M8! Not an M10. It is 25mm long. M8x1.5
The M10x42 bolts are the ones that fasten the triangular hanger bracket to the frame ( 2 bolts) and the cylinder head (1).
They are M10x1.5. 42 mm long. Shoulder bolts! There are no threads in the hangers!

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
JayDog, pull the other bolt and be sure of what you're looking for. It's no big thing - there is another set of hangers behind the cylinder head and the engine would (does) hang there just fine without those big brackets bolted up. Put a jack under the motor if it makes you feel better
.
So: what was under the glued-on bolt head? The remainder of the bolt? Nothing? I had to do a Timersert repair in that region when I ham-handedly stripped one of the frame threads. You can get an overview of the repair on page 13 of this gallery:

Here's a link to J.R.'s 'vendor' post. He's a good guy. Ask him if he still has bolt sets for the case guards.

P.S. Did I say 'Welcome to the site' yet? Welcome to the site, if not :)

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
One more time: His description is confusing. The engine guard does not attach or go close to any of the bolts that hold the engine (10x42). If a bolt head was glued to the outside of the guard, it could only be the bolt that holds the guard to the hanger bracket. In any case, the pitch on both sets of bolts is 1.5

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
Thanks for all the help. Just to end the curiousity, this bolt ran through the guard, through the hanger and through the frame. And just the bolt head was glued on - nothing behind it. I am pretty sure the threads are okay behind.

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
What engine guard do you have? One of the European "Rickman"-style ones?

I have no clue. Based on some other stuff on the bike I have seen so far, it was probably simply installed wrong.

There are a few more different ones, but here are pictures of the most common engine guards.SteveG wrote:It would be interesting to see. A picture is worth a thousand words!!

The first one is the original Honda "Hondaline" guard, the second one is one often seen in Germany and the third is, what I call the "Rickman"-style guards, which are more common in the U.K. As you can see, only the Rickman uses the engine hanger bolts as fastening points. The others use the center M8 threaded hole in the hanger bracket.

Re: Engine Hanger Bolts
That is what I love about this forum. Guys, like EMS, instantly have pics of all the variations. Like they have a world-wide supply of every part in their inventory and can post helpful photos comparing any details immediately. Most forums would wait for the OP to post a pic and then comment.
Mike, Kerry, Don, Dave, Nils, and many others have consistently done this with swingarms, bars, mirrors, guards,...you name it! So helpful to us new owners.
Thanks guys.
