Questions about stock pipes.

Well, the first project for the winter was removal of the exhaust to polish with a buffing wheel and rouge. So far I have seen a big improvement and the light pits and imperfections seem to blend in and shine up nicely.

My mufflers are stamped SANKEI 2040. Is that correct for stock 1979 exhaust?

Has anyone ever removed the baffles from a stock set of mufflers? Mine look like they are secured by a dot of weld on either side of the exhaust opening.

Hi ya, 6pipes. Welcome to the site.
'79 pipes would have HM422 stamped.
'80 pipes would have HM469 stamped.
The numbers wold be on the other side of the muffler from the 2040.
Why would you be removing the baffles?

Thanks for the response. I'll check the numbers on the other side of the pipes.

As for the baffles. The bike is too darn quiet for me but I don't want to put on a set of aftermarket exhaust.

The stock pipes are too rare and valuable to remove baffles, imho.
Used aftermarket Mac 6-2 systems can be found relatively cheap if you want more volume.

As Steve said, PLEASE. PLEASE don't cut up a good stock exhaust. Lots of guys have modded stock pipes they'd be willing to sell cheap. When prices were at their highest 3 or 4 years ago, mint stock pipes were going for over $3000 a set and ones like yours would fetch close to $2K. Not just now however and we don't know where all this is heading in the short term.

I'd advise just cleaning them up with the intent on using them for a bit after you get the resto done. Then get around to a few rallies and see what others have for aftermarket pipes and then you can chose what you might like if you want to change.

Just think of early H2 stock exhausts in terms of rarity and price!

Hope you are keeping a photographic record of your restoration - we're all junkies for photos!

I confirmed that my pipes are indeed 1979 vintage.

As for the baffles, I will definately not do anything to molest or damage the mufflers. I was just wondering if there was an easy way to get them out. The H2 is too easy. One bolt and the baffle is in your hands.

Has anyone cross sectioned an old rusty set of mufflers by any chance? It would be interesting to see how they are baffled.
