2 idle mixture screws don't go in deep as the others.

Post by rekit »

I'm having a strange problem. I've got Mike Nixon's book and Randakks carb kit, rebuilding carbs on my 81 X. #5 and 6 slow mix screws stop 1/8" higher than the others. I've measured the depth, diameter of the small holes, and swapped screws. Cannot find any reason why they don't go in as far as the others. All the old washers and o-rings were removed and accounted for. I tried without the springs, washers, and o-rings-no difference. The screws are not buggered up. When I screw them in with the springs and washers, these two don't go in far enough to put tension on the springs and I'm sure they are not going to work right. Any ideas?

:? :? :? Usually its because the small washer and O-ring don't sit correctly...but you said you have the same problem trying to put in the screws without them...???? That's a mystery to me.

This is a mystery, but just to make sure, are you sure the very small diameter on the end of the screws is not bent? It would not take much before it would miss the hole and stop the screw.

Sometimes the threads in the tower are really crappy down that far. Get yourself a tap (M6x.75) to clean out the threads. Otherwise, as Spencer said, you have some bent tips or some errant washers still in the holes. When fully seated, the brass tips should stick up into the carb bore enough to feel them with your finger. Good luck.

Yep, it was the threads. I was afraid to screw them in any further-I thought they bottomed out, but they weren't. I just turned a little harder and in they went. Thanks everyone.
