Pressing in new slow jets?

Post by rekit »

Got new #35 slow jets for my 81 X. (Thanks, Sirius!)I have Mike Nixon's book. Anything else I need to know to press em in? Looks like I get one shot at it. Will they find they're own proper depth? Also, I understand that there are 5 place's I should see a flow when I spray the idle circuit. Can someone be a little more clear where to look? Thanks.

This may be overkill, but here is what I did. It will stop when it is all the way in, but it is hard to know when the jet is all the way in. You don't want to drive it too hard and damage anything, so I measured how far they should be when they are seated.

Use a dial or digital caliper.
4103

Your caliper has a depth measuring rod that sticks out when you open the jaws.
4104

Open the jaws about half an inch or so. Stick the rod into the opening where the jet is.
4105

Push the caliper down till it contacts the top of the opening for the jet.
4106

Read the depth on the dial or digital readout.
4107

Remove the jet. Drive the new jet in carefully, with a pin punch. Periodically measure the depth and stop when it is the same or very close to what the original was.

I use a specially made shouldered driver, turned to the appropriate length. It bottoms on the casting boss when the jet is all the way in. Be careful. They press in very gently, and they really don't go in all that far. Also, I have found that the Sirius jets are a slightly smaller diameter, so they go in even faster.

You can also cut the emulsion tube part off of an old pilot jet and you are left with a perfect brass driver that won't hurt the new one and bottoms them out just when the driver is flush with the tower.

Thanks. Great pic's. I have the caliper, and the old jets so I should be good to go.
