neutral light dilema and kill switch not killing

Post by korvette kid »

Greetings again.
while doing some coil work on my 82, I went to push the starter button to check for a spark, and the neutral light failed to come on even after verifying the bike was in neutral. Only after pulling in the clutch would the engine turn over. All was normal during prior engine rotation attempts, then this problem occured.
My other problem is the kill switch will not function. There is a blk/w wire to one soldered terminal and one blk wire to the other along with what seems to be a small metal arm attached with a philips. The wires are not touching.
The switch seems to function mechanically operating in each mode by way of it detenting in each position.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is defective.Do you have a wiring harness for your bike?

I have a maintenance manual with a wiring diagram/schematic. Where is the switch located? I will not be at the bike untill next week. I looked at the shift linkage and found nothing.

Opps I was at work and I guess I was in automotive mode-sorry-the neutral switch is in the left side cover where oil is added-Check for continuity between the switch and ground when in neutral.I have a wiring diagram for 79 and 80 so I'm not sure if they are the same as an 82.There is a diode in the wiring on the 79 and 80.

Well, if I had one, in my 79 or 82, it must have been disconnected at one time because they both start, clutch in or out, bike in neutral or any gear. :) :?

Korvette Kid,
Welcome to tje forum. I must have missed your arrival.

I'm putting together an ICOA rally in Colorado next summer, and we'll be staying in the Montrose/Ridgway area for a few days. Leave the last week of July and the first week of August open........ :D

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

Alright I just looked at the 81 & 82 wiring diagram and check the diode -
if the diode is bad the kill switch and neutral light will not work and only start when clutch is pulled in.I'm not sure where the diode is on the 82-the 80 is in the headlight bucket.-Keep us posted

The kill switch has not worked for a while yet the neutral light would come on and all was well with starting untill now. It seems strange that the neutral switch would reside in the left chain cover since it gets pretty gooey in there but I will check when I return home. Would it not seem feasible to check for 12 volts going to the kill switch and then check switch operation? I had no idea that the neutral and kill were in the same circuit. I will run through the testing and get back with my results. Thanks

It is not in the chain cover. It is in the transmission cover.
