to start the restoration here's my plan. comments?

Post by beedub »

Quick background:'81 CBX rolling gear not bad, wheels tires, frame ok cosmetics bearable for now. no windshield.

Motor is out, head off, cams out, alt off, starter off, fairing off, lowers off, exhaust dinged both sides inc. pipes, 3 large tubs of stuff, some extra parts

Main plan: reassemble the motor and get it running in the bike. take out if bad & fix. if not then electrical, wiring, wheels, brakes etc.

I'm going to start the whole project by reassembling the cylinder head. clean it first, maybe bead blast chambers with valves in, then take valves out carefully , clean and lightly, gently lap. If they aren't burned then reassembly with new seals and match up the "a" and "b" buckets. Check camshaft wear lobes and journals. check cam chain stretch. figure out how to reassemble chains and tensioner when installed. check cam shim clearance and shuffle as required getting new ones as needed.

Next would be a careful examination of the rest of the motor paying close attaention to see if there are shavigns in the crankacse, really don't want to pull the cylinders. check rod endplay. cylinders look good, maybe mic the bore? most pistons showing slighly oily crud buildup except one which is a much lighter color.

thanks, more to come!
