not charging

Post by DevonCbx »

Thanks all, for the information regarding charging. I used another battery voltage meter which is very accurate. When the bike is niot running, the voltage at the battery is 12 volts. When it is running the voltage drops to about 10 volts. When the bike is reved up, the voltage does not increase. The voltage used to increase while driving to about 13.5 volts until 2 days ago. Although the voltage did raise to about 12 volts for a period of time. The battery I am using is brand new Honda battery. Also when riding the bike I also smelled which I believed to be an electrical burning smell.
Thanks

What do the brushes look like?

Both about the same length . . . . or one much longer than the other?

Pull the alt', check with meter per Honda manual. Check spring length and condition of plates, washer and brushes. Replace bearings while unit is off (cheap item). Connector behind side panel could have melted, cut off and replace with spade connectors...sure beats watching tv!

Do everything already mentioned - you may find it's just brushes. My bet is, however, the rotor is bad. Do a quick check by taking an Ohm reading between the two slip rings. The reading has to be between 3.6 and 4.8 Ohm. Anything out of that range high or low and the rotor is bad. Easy to get rewound. Much rarer is a bad stator or regulator.

So does the connector. That is still my bet!
