Brake light not coming on - only with handbrake

handbrake lever does not make brake light work on cbx250



any tips for things I should check/ troubleshoot?

Check to see if the switch is plugged in. It's under the brake fluid res. Next see if it is actually making contact (it could be stuck). You can check it with a VOM hook it up for continuity and squeeze the lever. If no continunity with lever in either position, switch is bad.
