plug wire ?
greetings cbxers
getting a 1980 cbx back on the road after years of sitting and would appreciate some opinions on plug wires.i am putting on new accel coils to replace the originals and have taken out the DR8ES-L plugs that were in the bike and replaced with D8EA .
i have a new set of honda wire wires or the silicon graphite suppression wires that come with the coils to choose from.
wire ,graphite or alternate every other one ?

thanks for the replies
thanks for the welcome
i think i will go with the ones that come with the coils and i can put some black split loom over them to hide them if i don't like the look.
i will post some pic's and history when the body parts come back from the paint booth.hopefully this week.

plug caps
put the coils and wires on last night and found a mistake i had made earlier with the first set of plugs and honda wires.the ngk plugs do not come with the little cap that threads on the end (and are probably a good thing to have)of the spark plug.
when i first got the bike the carbs had supposedly been rebuilt so i put them back on along with new OEM wires and "R"plugs.it ran but with two cold cylinders.after taking #6 bowl off i found the float on upside down.
off came the rack again .two floats on wrong and all bowls were full of nasty stuff.carbs had never been rebuilt.rebuilt and reinstalled carbs and started up with all 6 cylinders firing but running a little rich.
anyhow my point is it ran with a very poor connection between wire and plug even with a totally messed up carb.if i had not decided to change the coils it would have stayed that way for who knows how long and what a headache that could have been.
( also it is about impossible to buy them little caps by themselves.)

Check out aviation suppliers, they seem to replace them for some reason...
Here is a contact in the UK, shipping would be more than the item though...

right.the plugs function the same with or without them. with caps that fit tight over the plugs the wires and plugs stayed in contact and the engine ran.i just think that at some point they might have backed off after some road vibration and some arching would occur.EMS wrote:It depends on the design of the wire caps whether you need the metal tops on the spark plugs or not. The Accel caps require them.
the good thing is it ran again tonight .i did have to bypass the fuel line diaphram to make things work sooooo...........over to the carb board to find out what everyone else has done .fix or eliminate ?
