Dyna S ignition timing
I'm having a problem with timing my new Dyna S ignition on my 79 CBX. Here's what I can't figure out. First off, according to the instructions I got with the ignition that I bought from TIMSCbx it just says to time according to the Honda CBX shop manual, fine I tried doing that but here's what happens, first of all there was no timing mark provided on the plastic rotor that came with the Dyna kit, so I painted a small white line that lines up with the middle of the pickup magnet on the rotor. When I shoot my timing light at the mark on the rotor and move the advancer plate back and forth on it's adjustment range the mark on the rotor doesn't move either direction in relation to the pickup nub on the middle of the advancer pickup. In fact the white mark is not even directly lined up on the middle of the nub on the advancer pickup, it's slightly right of the pickup nub as you look at the advancer. Shouldn't the white mark move in relation to the direction (forward/backward) that I move the advancer plate? When I do move the advancer plate you definitely can tell it is having an effect on the timing of the bike because it changes the idle speed when moved both directions. So can someone please explain to me why the white timing mark doesn't move also? Not an expert by any means but if someone explains what I need to do, I probably could manage doing it. Thanks, Steve

Remove the right side crank cover as your sitting on the bike,You need to put your timing light on the F mark at the crank, and align it to where the cases come together. Now move the advancer plate at the ignition and see the F mark at the crank move.
If you are working from the 79-80 manual, reference the back of the manual under technical features, this is a static timing procedure.
81-82 reference page 3-5
The F mark should align with the front crankcase mating surfaces, Turn the base plate at the advancer counterclockwise to advance the timing.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I am trying to puzzle this very thing out now myself and its still not clear to me.Jeff Bennetts wrote:Remove the right side crank cover as your sitting on the bike,You need to put your timing light on the F mark at the crank, and align it to where the cases come together. In the manual I see a 'dynamic' method involving draining the engine oil, disconnecting all the plug wires, removing and grounding #6, and timing the "F" mark to the case halves using the timing light and the starter to turn the engine over.
Then there is the 'static' method, which describes comparison of the F mark/case half aligment and the the rotor-pulser alignment. With the Dyna this method seems impossible for the reason the OP mentioned: there is no tooth on the rotor visible, nor pickup point on the pulser unit with which to measure alignment.
So am I correct in surmising that I need to use the dynamic method and drop the oil to adjust the ignition timing using a Dyna ignition?
TIA,
N.
