80 mph speedo when going over 85 mph.
Hi all, looking at getting a cbx. Wondering what happens with the 85 mph speedo when u go faster than 85. Aside from occasional questionable judgement, some sections of road I ride are often 90 mph or u are in the way. And most of roads I ride are almost always 80mph ... does it damage the speedo to peg it often. I think there is a limiting pin so needle can't keep going. Does the tip break off?. I'm assuming the 1982 will go well past 85 mph.

No it won’t break. BTW the 85 mph speedo can be modified to a 150 mph speedo like the 79s.

You'll use a lot more oil. And you might get a ticket. Nothing bad will happen to your speedo.

Exactly as Dave said. If you might be interested to have a 140 speed there are two options: Find a nos somewhere or a used one; OR check with Mike Grossmueller viewtopic.php?p=106713&hilit=speedometer#p106713
Mike can convert your 85 to a 140 with a new face plate.. Best in the business.

Re: 80 mph speedo when going over 85 mph.
My Prolink has a set of modified 150 mph gauges from Mike G. New everything, fully rebuilt and modded with new faceplates and needles. I had him leave the original mileage on the odo so anyone can see how many miles the whole bike has. More honest I believe than writing down what it was and zeroing out the odo. Only a purist can tell they’re not original (looking). Only the 79s had the 150 mph speedo. There was a 500 (I think) difference in the tach’s redline too. I also left that original to the Prolink. I was kind of wary about removing that 43 year old decal on the speedo lens but it turned out OK.

Mike’s work is exquisite, and I do not throw that word around, 10/10.
