Good advice Dave, I'm still changing things after pondering for 27 years...

Thanks. I am a OEM fanatic and mechanically inclined so I don't forsee any difficulties. I have a bunch of books in or coming in about the CBX like I did with my 750's and just bopught a bunch of microfiches and a reader/printer so I am all set. Painting is the only aspect of restoring I haven't tackled yet but this winter I may give it a go.

Painting is what I enjoy the most. :) I've been painting for many, many years. When you are ready to paint, let me know if you need any info.

brings back sweet memories of the first one which showed up in my town where I grew up, same candy red, great sound especially after removing the baffles and the smoothest engine ever offered to the general public !!! that until the CBX showed up of course...

For some years now, I have keeping track of CBXes I see for sale. Here are some numbers from my records - by all means, not complete!

Since July 2004, VIN numbers when available:

1979 models for sale : 43. Lowest VIN 20 00045 highest 20 21148
1980 models for sale : 10. Lowest VIN 20 00181(J) highest 20 12721(US)
1981 models for sale : 20. Lowest VIN 30 0212 highest 30 5672
1982 modesl for sale : 28 Lowest VIN 40 0073 highest 40 2719

Anybdoy own a higher or lower VIN? Would be interested to know!

My 1980 has frame-number JH2SC03 2012663 and engine-no SC03E-204115.

My 79 is cb1 2001017

the 81 is bc 301117

the 82 is cc 400048

Just looking at the bike's registration slips, my numbers are,

CB12005074 with a motor number of 2005139

JH2SC0605CC401402 with a motor number of SC03E2401413

Sound about right?

SERIAL NUMBERS
On tracking CBX serial numbers, ICOA has been doing this as part of new member club applications and renewals for as long as I can remember.
Given 2/3rds +/- of all CBXs came to the states, ICOA just might have the largest number of CBX serial numbers by owner in the world.

I checked the ICOA Database and our records show the following 79s owned by members with the last two serial numbers less than CB1-2000099. CB1-2000039, CB1-2000048, CB1-2000052, CB1-2000054, CB1-2000056, CB1-2000075 & CB1-2000079

There are ten or more with serial numbers between CB1-2000100 & CB1-2000199. There could be alot more in both these ranges.......this was a very quick search on the topic.


HIGH MILEAGE CBXs..........a CBX/CBXer accomplishment
Highest mileage on any CBX that I am aware of is 205,518 by Rib Jennings on his 82 which is a very impressive statistic .....maybe even more impressive than a low/no mile, a low serial number ..............or an absolute stock X which ofcourse is the most common CBX configuration since all 40,000+ CBXs made by Honda were "stock."

Terry....how many miles do you have on your X now.

For those that sorta want a CBX that wins bike shows, yet wins bike shows........it can be done. Dave McMunns 50k mile 79 wins bike shows at CBX rallies all the time.

I don't know the serial number of my 80 which I bought new, but it shows 65k or so on the speedo and the cable being broken for 5+ years at a point in time when we were all riding them daily and to/from rallies........so my guess is my X really has 85k to as many as 100k.

There are many levels of satisfaction owning a CBX, but mine has always been doing small econo handling things and riding it. Check the distorted twist grip of my 80 in the photo below....tells a big story and I would not trade those miles, fun, rides for a zero mile or low serial number bike show winner. Just another view... ...thx for listening.

Mike, my 79 is approaching 50,000 and the 82 turned in the mid 87,000s on my last ride up the coast. You know, I realize that its not of earth shattering importance but I would like to know how many CBXs were sold by year model and I find it hard to believe that HondaInc doesn't have those figures somewhere in their archives. Has anyone actually made a real effort to ask Honda for these numbers? As I count, my 79 is the 5,079th Z model sold in the US. Did they sell 6,000 or 16,000? It would also be kinda cool to know how many have a matching number early model. I think my numbers are off by 65, 5,139-5,074=65.

If you click "Home" in the light blue area above and then on the left area of the page scroll down to "CBX Vital Statistics" which I think has alot of information about production qty and serial numbers per year. Is this what you are looking for?
