Gas Mileage
2 recent trips, using 9 Tanks of fuel total, revealed a low MPG of 30.9 and a high of 39.0. Most were 34.5-36.5 and a average of all was 35.74.
The lowest was during "spirted" mountain riding, while the highest was a 130 miles flatland cruise at 70mph. Just thought you'd like to know.
btw- The bike is a late model (C) with stock exhaust, carb., airbox. Gearing has been changed to a 3 cog smaller rear sprocket, stock front. JJD

Gas milage

I concur with your mileage numbers, I have the same bike minus any gearing changes. The mileage and the fun factor give more smiles per gallon than anything else I currently drive.

hi jeff
normal riding on my 80 early model...whatever that is ...way back in early 80s........ i always got 37/38mpg
i would think you would get better mileage than you stated with a 39t rear sprocket, but it is within norm.
worst mpg:
at marlinton in 99 on sport bike ride i got 68 miles on a full tank of gas
at track day last year i was only go 56 miles in tank of gas
dont say the obvious that i weighed more since marlinton 99....thats not possible

Always low 30's on my 81. But what really bugs me is reserve; w/ .9 gallons, you are dry after 20 miles or so. Thats not a comfortable margin. Not the kinda bike you want to tip way over to get all the gas to slosh to petcock side (and I've done that a few times, on other cycles ). Exactly how much gas do the 81/82 hold not including reserve? I can never remember. Its good for around 130 trip miles 'till reserve.

Fuel capacity
Official fuel capacity in Prolink models is 22.0 Liters or 5.8 U.S. gallons. Reserve is supposed to be 3.0 Liters or .8 U.S. gallons. You can increase the amount of reserve by extenting the main tube of the petcock. You will lose regular capacity and you will have to rework the strainer. Only makes sense, if you do a lot of touring in deserted areas ( North Dakota e.g.) and may have to cover a greater distance to the next "water hole".

MPG
Thanks guys, just wanted to ensure mine was in the ballpark. Was hoping to do a little better, considering the gearing. Another 7 tanks this past weekend yielded the similiar results.
Speaking of reserve, the PINGLE petcock is lacking a reasonable reserve. Switched to reserve on a 7 mile ride to work, ran out on the way home. gee- 650lbs. seems heavy when pushing.... JJD

I don't think the pro-link in the real world holds 5.8 gallons, I've hit reserve and fill-up always 4.5 gallons or so.
BTW, I filled it up w/ CAM II today, (for CBX research, of course). Its not bad, but not a big difference. I've been told its a good choice for long term storage, maybe I'll do my valves, polish the cover, and adjust the cam chains (2) then button it up w/ a nos tank I've been saving for a couple of years. Like I always say, these bikes continue to improve.
