Tach drive leaking.

Post by steve murdoch icoa #5322 »

I have replaced the tach drive o-ring and oil seal on my '81 and it continues to weep.
The previous owner had a bead of red gasket sealant of some sort that i removed when changing the seal.
Wondering if there is a difference in early and late tach drives and maybe i have the wrong cover?
Any thoughts on a sealant?

If the seals good, and the openings not worn or scratched and the drives the same condition. I'd treat it with a little grease or asssembly lub when you assembly the cable thru the cover.

Is it a leak or just a stain? My 81 Prolink had a slight stain or film there from new.

That was always an area of wiping after riding to keep the stain or weep from attracting dust.

I hope this helps,

Is it leaking from the base of the tach drive plate or the cap of the cable?

George, on another '81 i have seen there was a light mist after a 2 hour romp. Mine is a heavier leak.
Jeff, i had never considered that it might be coming from the cable connection, i thought it was from the plate to valve cover connection. It is a new tach cable as well as the seal and o-ring.

The O-ring and seal are the same on early and late models.
