Hey guys......

I've got a half gone sticker on a X speedometer that won't come off. I've tried the usual mineral spirits that normally dissolves any sticker glue, but this sticker won't budge.

Normally I'd go to something stronger, but the speedo lens is plastic and I'd hate ruin it with harsh chemicals trying to get the sticker off.

Any suggestions ?

Have you tried WD40? I also use a product called "goop-off" don't remember where I got it.

I've used WD40 with a plastic or wooden stick like a popsickle stick (anything softer than the area you're trying to clean up) with good results many times. Can't say that I've tried anything over clear guage lenses though.

The sticker glue has hardened (crystalized) and it's going to be real difficult. I can't help with the removal but when you do get it off, I've used KIT-Scratch Out on plexi with good results removing scratches and yellowing. It's in a yellow bottle at Walmarts in automotive. Good luck. I've also had speedometers apart by taking a small screwdriver and prying up the metal ring that holds them together. When I put it back together I smash the ring down with channel locks. Barely noticeable (but to me it's preferable to have a functional guage that's blemished then a pretty, non-functional guage).

Btw.... Goof-Off is just mineral spirits......and the fact that the sticker has crystalized hardened is really the issue here.....so I guess it's going to be one muther to deal with and get off without messing up the plastic lens.

The CBX List (Linda) says denatured alcohol and Swifty says WD40.....but due to the crystalized nature of the sticker I don't think either will work but I'll give 'em a go anyway.

I've heard of this stuff but never used it. I have used alcohol and its not nearly as effective as WD40 and takes much more elbow grease to remove old sticker glue.

I agree that it's going to be more difficult because it's been on there so long . . . . But I think mineral spirits is still the best bet because it's SAFE for your lens

I would position the speedo so that a small puddle of mineral spirits keeps the sticker 'underwater' 24/7 and then give it a week or two to soak, adding small amounts of spirits 2 or 3 times a day to keep up with the evaporation - You can also peel away at the edges of the sticker every day ot two so the solvent can get at the glue easier. I think it will *eventually* get the job done

Yes..... I agree.... mineral spirits is probably the most safe sticker and adhesive softener when considering the plastic lens.

Jeff Bennetts pointed out that the lense is glass. In that case, use a razor blade to carefully remove the sticker, then something like WD-40 to remove any glue that's left.

Yup....... it's glass.

But ya know what ? It looks and feels like plastic because Honda softened the look (and feel) of it
so it wouldn't reflect the sun in our eyes. So Honda.

Sooooooooo out with the razor blade and the sticker came right off.

The first of a half dozen gauges I have disassembled over the years was for a broken lens, I replaced it with a laxen lens. The OEM glass lens is convex and has a slightly textured surface to stop reflection.

I used an OEM glass lens to make a mold and put the lexan lens I cut over top the OEM lens and stuck it in the oven, the lexan lens softened and formed to the OEM lens to become convex shaped. I also experimented with different shades of laxen and settled for a light orange shade and has been on my 79 speedo for some years and it doesn't reflect light.
