My 79 is a pretty early production unit with a VIN ending in 5074 so your's is 2,746 units older (earlier) than mine is. I forget the manufacturing date but it was first sold in 4/79. Do you know if you have a similarly numbered motor, the one that came with the frame? Does it have smooth or spiraled studs on it? My motor number is 2005139, 65 numbers from the VIN but the motor number is still way back on the motor, under the airbox and almost impossible to see (early production). Later motors had their number stamped right behind the cylinders on the right side, much easier to find. Honda pulled quite a few motors off the production line as test mules so getting a motor that's really close to your VIN is a rare occurrence.
It ain't the destination, its the journey...

CB1-20 02328 is a good number. However, considering that April 78 was the first production month of the CBX, I am slightly skeptical that the two go together. I may be wrong, however. Someone with another low number or a 4/78 production date would have to chime in.
The motor numbers didn't migrate from the primary cover to behind the cylinders until into the 17,000s

I just found that picture of VIN-plate ofa 1979 Turbo that was sold by Michael's Motorcycles at 2008 VMD and went to Australia. Unfortunately, I did a lousy job and didn't get the DOP
