82 Front Fairing Removal
On an '82 (and probably and '81) how does the front fairing disconnect from the frame up front by the headlight? The service manual gives 3 steps but only 1 picture which I cant figure out. It sounds like it can all be removed as a unit (fairing + light + signals). I have the sides of the fairing disconnected, just cant figure out how it is attached up front. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the site Brian!
The fairing can be removed as a single unit with the signals and light attached.
Since you have the manual, it should say on page 13-18, second picture down, second line of text: "Remove the fairing mount bolt."
This bolt is just behind the steering head. Notice top and middle pictures on next page (13-19) which show a "U" shaped bracket sticking back from the lower center of the fairing. The "U" wraps around the steering head and has the bolt go through it and the steering head.
As long as you have the leg shields off, the bolt that holds the engine guards to the upper engine mount loose (or completely out, I don't remember), the fairing will come off by moving it forward and slightly up. Somebody to hold and help is appreciated. Have something soft nearby to set it on.
Don't forget to disconnect the wiring plug for the fairing, and to unstrap the cable tie that holds the wiring harness to the "U" bracket.
Have Fun! Steve

Its a lot easier to see with the fairing off....

** Thanks ** 82 Fairing Removal
Thanks Steve and Terry. For future reference the black plastic box upfront just below the headlight adjustment knob from which you disconnect the wiring harness stays with the bike, not the fairing BUT is is connected to the fairing underneath with some plastic tabs. Pull the two rearward tabs toward the back of the back to disconnect those then slide the box slightly forward and up to release the box from the fairing then take the fairing off (or something like that!). The pictures on pg 13-19 helped - I should have put 1 and 1 together to figure that out.
