1980 swinging arm frame pivot lock nut tool

Post by alimey4u2 »

Removing my swinging arm on my 1980 ( A ) model for a polish & cleanup. And want to find/make a tool for the swinging arm frame pivot lock nut. The manual says Pt # 67908-4690001. How I did it 25 years ago I dunno.....

Any tips/hints/leads would be most welcome...

Ps. Birds are still tweeting, sun is still out & I have a real drive to get her back together before it F$%^&ing rains & freezes over again.... :?

It is a lock nut wrench that looks similar to the clutch locknut tool. Don't have the dimensions, but you can try to use a punch and light taps with a hammer to get it loose. Re-install is a little more difficult as you should use a torque wrench.

That's the one Mike, it has 4 encastlations....I was thinking of a punch but wondered if there was a better way other than milling a socket wrench. May have to go with the punch.....

Hi Larry

You might call some nearby Honda dealers....many of them still have the factory tools for old models like the CBX. From your standpoint having access to the tool in very important......to them it is just another ole factory tool for bikes the seldom see anymore, let alone do any work on them....so they do not value these tools like the ones for current/near current models and you might luck out and be able to buy it.

Once you find a dealer that actually has the tool the strategy on buying or borrowing this tool comes into play and I do this face to face for the few times I have done this. Normally I have found a credit card number with an agreed to amount if you dont return it in writing....will do it for borrowing....I have never been able to buy any factory tools from a dealer.

The other alternative is to take the bike or frame in this case to the dealer that has the tool.... to solve the issue at their shop.

I am not too sure what the issue really is as when I put the 1100f arm in my 80 there was no pivot bolt lock nut issues at all that I recall...though this was 15 plus years ago.... and all that was needed was to file off the grease caps a wee bit and it slid right in.

Just some ideas

Sadly 1980 "A" Models are in short supply over here so tools are like hens teeth.
However, the good news is that it came out without a great fuss & no damage, thanks to copious amounts of silicone grease I applied 25 years ago... 8)
To reassemble I will make a tool; only 4 encastlations so it could be made out of a pipe...

BTW, my manual say the tool # is 07908-4690001, not the # you mentioned in the original post.

Lock nut wrench (was 07908-469-0001, now -0003)

I found a source if you really want one.

http://www.directlineparts.com/product. ... 1387&str=2

Apparently, the Valkyrie uses the same tool. The P/N has been superceded twice since the CBX tool came out, and is now 07908-469-0003.

You're exactly right Bill...Thanks for that & the link. I have two options, have one made ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0305878954) over here or go with the Honda tool. Nice to have a choice..

Thanks for the great work... I owe ya....

141 "Euro" for the Honda tool, out of stock in the UK right now so I think I will go with the manufactured one, which is much cheaper.

Mel, Jan & Mike, I'll also be loaning it out to UKCBX CLUB & ICOA members so it's a win win for CBXdom.... 8)

Great support guys.... 8)

Let me get this straight, Larry. You have loose nuts but soon you will manufacture (or someone will for you) a tool to tighten your nuts. And you'll loan it out to other CBX owners with the same affliction (insert emoticon of your choice here). Such a great community.

Just ordered the tool, according to the Gentleman, ( Kev) it's also the same size as a 95 Fireblade.... 8)

$35 not too bad, ( in stainless too) he also makes any kind of "castelated socket" for headbearings, motor mounts etc. etc. Got him bookmarked, you never know...
