SIDE STANDS.

Hi, both my 79 Zs are really unstable on there side stands,to the point that i dont feel safe using them at all. Is this a common problem? They dont look bent or anything,cheers Merv.

I believe that is the result of a fairly wide bike with a stand fairly close to the center. If Honda brought the stand out further, it would have resulted in less ground clearance. None of mine are extremely stable on the side stand.

Im sure that a slight gust of wind would have mine over,not good !

Not a problem with standard sized wheels Merv although I do tend to turn the wheel in & am careful on grades....

The one on my 79 had a bow (bend) in it that I had fixed. Heated and straightened and then I had the welder weld a piece of steel on the inside of the leg and add some metal to the bottom (foot) and grind it smooth. Bike sits more upright now and is very stable and with that added steel it should never bend again.

Both my Xes stand fairly well on the sidestand

I hardly use it on the 79, though because of me being paranoid about hydrolock, but as I said, I do not see a stability problem, really.

Merv might have the opposite problem. My 82 sits so upright, it falls over to the right if I'm not careful. It fell over on the trip to Colorado last year.

George, thats exactly right it feels like it would fall to the right (opp side to the stand)

You have stock wheels on your Xes? The popular conversions almost always include smaller wheels, which could create the problem you talk about.

Hi no both bikes run standard wheels etc, cant figure it out, but if you were to push the bike gently with your little finger CRASH !!

my 82 has a works performance rear shock and it's shorter then the stock shock when fully extended. Do you have stock shocks? And what year bikes do you have?

Hi they are both 79 bikes,one is a UK bike and the other is a US bike,both are on standard rear shocks. Maybe im just unlucky, and the previous owners were big guys who used to sit on there bikes with the side stand down !?

if you remove the fork caps and put a little longer spacer on top of the springs, you'll get a little more spring pre-load on the front and that'll lift it up a bit. Rear shocks on the stifffest will also do the same on the rear. It'll give a fairly harsh ride, though.
