1981 CBX Official First service (600 mile) requirements???
Hi, All
I have an '81 CBX with only 1235 original miles on it.
The bike runs and rides great!
I strongly suspect however, it did not get its 'full' 600 mile break-in service.
Of course the oil has been changed along with other standard service items, but I am wondering if anyone can provide me with an official factory Honda list of items to check /adjust during the first service?
For example, do the cylinder head nuts need to be retorqued? When is the first valve adjustment supposed to be?
Many thanks,
Doug

from the service manual for the 600 mile service-
Inspect-throttle operation, valve clearance, ignition timing, carb sync, idle speed, battery, brake fluid, brake system, brake light switch, headlight aim, clutch, suspension, nuts, bolts, fasteners, wheels, steering head bearings.
Replace-engine oil, engine oil filter
Adjust-Cam Chain Tension
Sell-cylinderically deficient motorcycles (sorry-couldn't resist )

Yeah, the mileage is accurate!
This was one of the few 1981 bikes donated to schools in the USA (by Honda, as a tax write-off at the time) that was not completely destroyed by students.
This one sat somewhere in the high school in Redding CA, basically untouched until 2004. Then the guy who found / purchased it and got it on the road had a series of strokes after putting only about 1,000 miles on the bike. Then I bought it two years ago, and only just got it on the road last week.
It has been stripped down into a naked bike, with 6>1 Kerkers and K&N filters, but I have all the parts to restore it to a mint condition completely original '81.
Anyhow, so far I'm having a BLAST!!
I went for my first 'real' ride yesterday on it, and had the most incredible experience...
On my way home, I stopped by a friends place nearby - he used to own a 1982 CBX before I met him, he just sold it last year.
I left my friend's place, heading towards home. As I was about to turn right a few blocks from home, coming straight towards me was a wickedly red, spotless Ferrari 360 Modena (I looked it up as soon as I got home).
He was also turning the same direction, so I let him turn first. WHAT A CAR...as soon as he turned he opened the thing up and took off like a scalded rabbit...I was right behind him, opening up the CBX to keep up with him. For several hundred yards we kept pace together, wide open on my part, and it must have been pretty much wide open for him too...through the first three gears, anyhow.
LET ME TELL YOU IN ALL MY LIFE I HAVE NEVER HEARD such an intense orgy of mechanical heaven...I almost messed my pants the sounds were so intoxicating...it may have only lasted a few seconds (until I turned off to head home), but it was a few seconds of gearhead bliss I will NEVER forget!!!! Hearing two such different but equally spectacular internal combustion marvels winding out simultaneously was almost more than I could take
Cheers,
Doug
