What is the trick to removing the dust cover on a 1980 CBX fork seal?

On my '79 i just used a screwdriver and VERY gingerly pried up on the seal working my way around the leg.
I did have one with some sort of sealant holding it in place but the heat from a hair dryer was enough to soften it.

I use a dull putty knife, work on the inside of the fork lower - if you mark the lower it won't show.

for clarification, I'm talking about just the dust cover and not the actual seal under the dust cover.

As Dave and Steve stated it just prys off. Hopefully nobody used sealant in the past as Steve
found.

OK. Thanks. I'll give it another try. Didn't want to damage it.

Often the dust covers need replaced as well as the fork seals. Your factory manual shows how to do all of this.

It's easy to accidentally chip the paint on fork sliders when removing dust covers with a screwdriver, but it's easy to repair.
I bought new fork seals for my 80 CBX, but before taking the forks off to change them I tried Sealmate instead and it worked great.
No more leaks. Sealmate is just a thin piece of plastic with a slight hook that cleans and removes the gunk between the seals and fork tubes. You could make one, but I was worried some unforeseen thing would screw up the process.
It's something you can use along with each for an oil change.

If you have a leaking seal, it is most likely way past time to completely disassemble the forks and service them.
