Tire choice 2023

Post by oroepke »

Hello everyone, I am new owner of a 1980 CBX and need new tires. I did some research on the forum and it seems that folks like the Shinko Tourmaster, Michelin Pilot Active, Avon Roadrider and possibly others.
For me important (in this order) are grip, price, longevity. So I rather have a softer tire, because I won't cross the country on this bike. All suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Any of those tires will perform just fine for anything you will do with your CBX.

Ok thanks. The correct sizes are 100/90-19 (front) and 120/90-18 (rear), correct?
I have seen posts where folks put a 130 in the rear, but I have done stuff like that on previous bikes and it never did the handling any good to go wider.

Yes those are the correct sizes for 79/80. 81/82 use the same front and a 130 rear.

I have used several sets of the Shinko 230s, and I like them a lot, they have a round profile that turns in smoothly and they stick and wear really well. Conversely, I used a couple of sets of the Avon Roadrider and did NOT really love the way they handled - they are more triangular and tippy-feeling, and had a nasty tendency to follow rain grooves. Nervous-feeling. YMMV - other people love those tires and swear by them.

Assuming you have standard wheel rims on the bike, the rear I fitted was a BT46 to the complement the BT45 I have on the front;

Bridgestone BT46 Motorcycle Tyres - 120/90 -18 BT46R 65V TL Rear it cost me £122 (= $145)

I think that the BT45s are being phased out in favour of the 46 and interestingly, they are making the tread in the middle of the tire deeper than the edges whereas on the 45s the tread was unifom across the entire width.

The bike handles great on these tires which are made in Japan.

I already bought the Shinkos but had the BT45 on another bike and they handled great. I hope the Shinkos won't disappoint! Cheers!

You are kidding! I live less than 200 yds from Mills Pond, Waterway Bend is half a mile from me!
