Best tire choice for my 82 Pro-link??

Post by Bikenut63 »

Hello all,
I'm looking to put new tires on my 82 Pro-link ASAP!! It currently has BT-45's on it, 100/90 front, 130/80 Rear. I would like to put the correct size on the rear(130/90) but I don't see many choices out there..
I see on the forum that the "S-11" tire seems to be a good choice but is being discontinued??
Does anyone have any suggestions for tires that come in the correct size (130/90) ??
Anyone using the cheapest tires on the market/ Shinko 230 Tour Masters?? As with any tire they get some good and some bad reviews, but none I've read are from a CBX owner.

Thanks in advance for any input/ suggestions.

Todd C.

Well-respected CBX builder JR Luksic (sp) from Michigan has been running the Shinkos and thinks highly of them. I wouldn't hesitate to use them when the S11s are gone.

I have about 3,000 miles on my Shinko 230 Tour Masters now and they are fine for me, it corners neutrally and is easy to put onto the center stand. My bike is a 100% Stock 1982. I have used Shinko's on several of my bikes and have had no issues.

Thanks a lot for the input guys, I'm going to give the Shinko's a try.
I was just a little skeptical to try them, as they don't appear to be a very sporty tire, and my Dad who has owned and ridin(82) CBX's since 82, has only ran BT45's or Metzlers on his.
I had no idea that the "correct" tire size choices were going to be so limited, which is a bummer for sure considering the tire technology that's out there these days!
Thanks again for the replies guys, and I will definately report my experience with the Shinko's.

Cheers, Todd C.

The Shinko 230's are also my tire of choice, now that the S11's aren't around anymore. I did a track day with the 230's on my 82 CB985F and they stuck like glue. Not quite as long lasting as the S11's, but they are a very good tire. Have one now on the rear of my 82 CBX and just logged 1400 miles this past weekend. No problems at all with it, and I highly recommend them. When the front S11 is worn out on the CBX I will be using the 230 there too.

I just bought Michelin Pilot Active set but 130-80x18 rear. For $190 shipped, they should be just fine and should last many miles.
My S11 are gone after about 7k miles

I was at Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach and saw the Shinkos at J&P Cycle.. and never really heard about them before, but nice to know they make a good tire if we need it.
I have always used and found that Michelins were the best for just about everything. Been using them on Harleys for years and the wear, handling, and mileage has been very good.

I've been running Kenda rear on mine. So far, looks good. Rides nice. Given I'm no 'boy racer' LONG way from 'boy' and from 'racer'), I can't comment about their ability at a 30+ degree lean angle. One thing to keep in mind if you put a 130/80 onto the rear, that 1/2 inch radius difference is noticeable! Keep that in mind when parking on the sidestand or raising a load onto the centerstand. (Been there; done that. You will notice it!)

I got my Michelin Pilot Active installed yesterday and tires seem great so far. My S11's were so squared off and bike felt so clumsy. Now it's easy to ride and initiate lean.
Rear is /80 and i haven't noticed difficulty putting it up on the center stand.
I'll go for longer ride this weekend and and report back
