X & A differenes

Hi all
I have a '79 and a 'A', which were bought in boxes from the same guy and now is the time to get them back together.
Can anyone tell me what are the parts that are specific to each model because although the parts are mostly labelled well I'm not sure what came from which bike apart from the obvious (wheels, tailpiece etc).
Any information gratefully received.

Well, there are over 120 differences between the '79 and '80 model. Where would you like me to start?

No, I'm serious. There are a whole bunch of parts differences and if you really want to make them correct, you have a lot of research ahead of you. Find good pics of both stock bikes and at least you'll see many of the cosmetic differences.

Went through the boxes again last night, the 'A' is more or less a rolling chassis with the engine out and the top end removed, I can figure out most of what is from the 79 by the newspaper's the parts are wrapped in (it was stripped in 1992). I've been told the cam covers are different but look the same to me and are the starters and generators different? (can't figure out why the 79 was stripped as it had only done 7,000 miles, even the gearbox has been pulled to bits instead of being left in larger chunks)

Yes, cam covers are different, starter is grey on the '80. Alternator cover is aluminum on the '80 vs magnesium on the '79. And on and on and on. I have a couple of minutes, so here goes:

80 gauge bezel is steel, 79 is aluminum
80 may have an 80mph speedo
80 forks have air caps, internal bushings and thicker wall tubes
80 brake calipers and holders held by hex bolts, '79 has socket head bolts
80 headlight bucket is of better construction and is marked 469
80 wheels are reversed black Comstars
80 tank has 4mm badge screws, 79 is 3mm
80 valve cover has larger grommet pads
80 valve cover bolts are slightly longer with larger grommets
Several internal engine differences, serial numbers are SC03 , 79 is CB1
80 carbs are VB62, 79 is VB60
80 side covers could be either satin or gloss black.
80 lower rear engine mount is a rod with 2 nuts if it is a Japanese model, it is a bolt and nut if it is a USA model
80 stock exhaust is 469, 79 is 422
80 has 530 chain, with appropriate sprockets and a cush system on the front
80 has tail lid and toolbox, and a different grab rail, mount for the seat/tail
80 regulator is smaller, with shorter bolts
These are some obvious things off the top of my head, there are many more.

The carb codes may not be VB60 or VB62 respectively, depending on where the bikes came from. relisysxx is in the U.K.
The fork sliders (lowers) are different also. Don't know if they are interchangeable, but they have different part numbers and the fork brace I had for a '79 will not fit on my '80. The diameter of the slider where the brace clamps to is larger on the 80.
Another major component that is different is the oil cooler.
