Saddle bags

Post by Jeff Dean »

I saw a early 80's Honda the other day, a CX500 I think. It had color matched Bags that looked really close to the late model X. The color was different han a CBX, and there was a "Honda" emblem on the side. I know the part number would be different, but I was wondering if it was physicialy the same bag ??? J. Dean 4112

Bags

Post by EMS »

Jeff:

Most of the Hondaline bags looked very much alike, however, for each model, the mounting was different. I picked up a set of brand new bags from a 900 in black a while ago for $75.00. Thought I could make them fit the late model brackets. No such luck.

GL500/650I Saddlebags

Honda offered several very similar saddlebag systems in the early 80s. The Sabre 750/1100 bag is similar, but has a more angular shape. The closest match is from the GL500/650 Silver Wing Interstate models.

They have an identical mounting arrangement to the CBX. I owned a 500I model years ago, and if I recall correctly, the dimensions are pretty close- though I never tried mounting the Interstate's bags on one of the CBXs.

500 Silverwing bags on CBX

Post by Mike Nixon »

I did do this to my bike years ago. The Silverwing bags do use a different mounting system, but I was able to adapt them. I may have a picture somewhere...

Yep, here they are. Circa 1986. They weren't painted in these pictures, but later were painted black along with the bike. The shot was taken at a rally in Illinois, the apex of a 3500 mile shakedown cruise -- so the bags worked really nice. The only trouble was my girlfriend wanted to pack more stuff...and I almost forgot, the stock mounts had to be braced later with additional triangular gussets. The increase from the stock 17 litre capacity to the Silverwing's 24 litre volume apparently added some strain. The thing on the back of the seat was my her mascot or something...

...I was afraid to post the pics after seeing so many fine bike pictures on this board, and what with the stuffed animal and all, but I needn't have worried -- neat, a group with a sense of humor! :D

Many members do have beautiful bike/s, but many also have fixer uppers and daily drivers. Those that get driven sometime don't look show room fresh, or have to be repaired, (its a fact of life) 8)
