Resolved: tilted engine to get carbs off, cannot jack it back up

Post by TonUp »

Help!

Prolink 81

Tilted engine, to get the carbs off.
Using a trolly jack, raised and lowered the engine small amounts initially to get the throttle cables off.
Got the airbox and carbs off ok.

Now wanting to raise the engine to put brackets back on ....
Using the jack, it will raise the engine a little way, then the front wheel lifts up?
Cannot see anything fouling to stop it.
Any ideas?

Currently resting on the jack and two tressels under the engine.

When i tilt the engine i use a bottle jack on the engine case just behind the oil filter.
Sounds like you MIGHT be too far rearward on the engine. Where are you contacting the engine?
Have you completely loosened off the pivot bolt?

got the jack under the oil filter, pivot bolt is loosened off
the engine will lift 90% of the way up, engine brackets nearly line up but not quite
as the engine lifts up to the 90% point, the engine stops moving and the whole bike starts to lift up

Did you completely remove the small triangle brackets?

I can only think of 2 possibilities. Either the motor has shifted enough to not align
within the frame at the top rear motor mount or the chain has gotten doubled over
at the front sprocket (under the cover) or both.

success !

Mate called round this morning. Lifted the engine with jack (same as I did yesterday) but today, it moved a little further up than occurred yesterday.
We discovered that moving the bars side to side also moved the engine a little up or down and this helped to get the brackets lined up.
Got the rear engine pin back in too.

Very happy to say the least.
Thanks for your help guys.

" the motor has shifted enough to not align
within the frame at the top rear motor mount" = thinking this probably was the issue
