Oil screen.

An easy one for you guys.
I have the oil pan sump cover off.
How do i remove the oil screen without destroying it?
Is it a plastic outer lip or now brittle rubber?

I have had good luck with a heat gun. Get it good and warm and use a screwdriver to pry it off. Get it as warm as you dare to. Don't heat too much.

It helped me to understand how it mounts - that rubber ring around the perimeter has a groove molded into it on the inner face, and the oil pickup neck has a flange that flares outward. The screen is slightly stretched over this flange, capturing the flange in the groove in the rubber. So you need to stretch/pry the rubber outward enough to get under it and then it will be easy to work your way around and pull it off. But as Terry said, it's old hard rubber and heating it up will go a long way toward softening it up and making it easier.

Thanks for the replies/suggestions.
Wouldn't have bothered with it but in changing the engine oil this time a 2" thin ribbon of red RTV sealer turned up.
I have never used that stuff and have only been valve adjustment deep into the motor so i figured i better have a look in the pan and screen.
Unfortunately even with the heat making the rubber more pliable the outer ring cracked and chunked.
Fortunately the screen was absolutely clean.
