How to keep gaskets from sticking to the engine case...
What is a good product to apply to a side cover gasket to keep it from sticking to the engine case? I've noticed these gaskets can really stick, and it's not easy to scrape an old gasket from the thin edge of the engine case without damaging the finish...or worse. Thanks for your help!

Hey BA:
An old mechanic's trick is to use Nickel Based Never Sieze. This stuff helps the gasket to flow when cinching it up, and the covers never leak AND they fall right off when you remove them! No gasket scraping required.
I've been doing this for years at work on gearboxes and compressors, etc.
PS I'd go with the crush type exhaust washers.... :)

Another trick is to lightly apply silicone to the gasket. By lightly, I mean put a dab on your finger, then wipe it around the gasket as though you're trying to wipe it back off. This microscopic film will let the gasket release later.
I've never tried silicone grease, but it may work as well.
My rule of thumb when using silicone is that if you can see it after you snug things down, you used too much.

After some research...
Looks like "Never-Seez Pure Nickel" by Bostik might be a good choice for gasket release problems. Anyone have any experience with this product? I saw the Hylomar page, but it looks like a gasket sealant, and not a gasket release product. Any comments?
